  • Shining light on DHX9: UV-induced stress granules illuminate protective mechanisms for daughter cell resilience

    Open Access•HELEN BARNES, Dylan M Parker et al.•ARTICLE•Molecular Cell•2024

In a recent article in Cell, Zhou et al. investigate the origins, composition, and biological consequences of UV-induced stress granules. They find that UV-induced stress granules are triggered by the formation of RNA-protein crosslinks, uniquely contain DHX9 as a marker, form during mitosis independently of translation repression, and are enriched in intron-containing RNAs and splicing factors. Moreover, UV-induced granules contain double-strand…

  • The Clinical Irrelevance and Scientific Invalidity of the "Minority" Notion: Deleting it from the Social Science Vocabulary

Doris Y Wilkinson, Doris Wilkinson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•2002

A systematic socio-linguistic and historical analysis of the minority label reveals its multiple irregularities and imperfections. These encompass a misleading array of vastly dissimilar nationality or group designations and the erroneous comparison of behaviors and life styles with racial status. As it is currently applied in U.S. political culture and in a variety of disciplines including sociology and social work, the concept has virtually no …

  • "Rethinking the Concept of "Minority: A Task for Social Scientists and Practitioners

    Doris Y Wilkinson, Doris Wilkinson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•2000•Cited by: 1

Although sociologists have articulated the components and scope of the "minority" concept, many of the characteristics are no longer germane. Originally those placed in the category were viewed as subordinate and as possessing cultural or physical qualities not approved or preferred by the larger population. There has been no systematic questioning of ingrained seductive words and value-based constructions like "minority". This brief critique off…

  • Reappraising the race, class, gender equation: A critical theoretical perspective

    Doris Y Wilkinson, Doris Wilkinson•ARTICLE•Smith College Studies in Social…•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The central thesis of this critical analysis is that racial‐self pervade the social structure and political economy and thereby affect consciousness, identity and all forms of relationships including the clinical context. Given this empirically grounded axiom, it is imperative that social workers become cognizant of the dynamic influence of race in practice and in research. Social class and gender are also potent variables in the equation. Howeve…

Cross-culturally, we live in societies that are permeated with structural dilemmas in values, beliefs, and life styles. Institutions of higher learning constitute appropriate settings in which to explore and translate the complex issues of modern life, especially ethnic conflict. Doris Y Wilkinson, Gary King•ARTICLE•Milbank Quarterly•1987•Cited by: 17•References: 2

The history, reality, and prolonged effects of racial stratification and its supportive ideology in the United States require systematic study of the impact of racial perceptions in the health sphere and in every facet of American life (Berry 1965; Berreman 1985; Blackwell 1985). In this regard, the use of race as an independent variable in social research is, in principle, similar to the presumed explanatory power of other status characteristics…

On every dimension of interaction as defined in this study, a higher percentage of those of status indicated less interaction with both parents in terms of the confiding process, communication, intensity of the relations…
