  • Factors influencing return to work following hospitalization for traumatic injury

    Ellen J Mackenzie, S Shapiro et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 4•References: 24

This paper describes the employment experience of 266 individuals one year after traumatic injury severe enough to require hospitalization. Of those working full-time prior to their injury, 56 per cent were employed full-time at one year; an additional 5 per cent were working part-time. Those sustaining a severe head or spinal cord injury were at highest risk of not returning to work (only 43 per cent and 21 per cent, respectively, had returned w…

  • Relationships between suicide attitudes and indicators of mental health among adolescents

    Judith M Stillion, Eugene E McDowell et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•1986

A growing body of research literature suggests a relationship between mental health status and attitudes toward suicide among adolescents. This paper reports two studies which explored opposite ends of the mental health continuum as they relate to suicide attitudes among young people. The first study compared attitudes toward suicide between a group of institutionalized 15–24 year olds and a group of college students. The second study assessed su…

  • Predicting Posttrauma Functional Disability for Individuals Without Severe Brain Injury

Ellen J Mackenzie, Sam Shapiro et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1986

The utility of the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), the most widely used anatomic scale for rating severity of injuries, and its derivative for assessing the combined effect of multiple injuries, the Injury Severity Score (ISS), were tested for their ability to predict functional disability at time of discharge from the hospital and 6 months after discharge. The ISS has been shown to correlate well with mortality and length of stay, but the relati…

  • Making a Meal out of Mahamaes

    Open Access•Richard T Smith•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1983•Cited by: 1•References: 1

While acknowledging the possible former role of floodwater in Chilca's sunken fields, this paper expresses concern about the limited and inconclusive evidence that Knapp presents in support of floodwater management. Too much reliance is placed upon inferences from integrated field layout while we still appear to lack either unequivocal and consistent stratigraphic evidence or firsthand experience of river flooding at Chilca. It is also doubtful w…

  • The effects of social resources on recovery and perceived sense of control among the disahled

    Open Access•Richard T Smith, Lorraine Midanik et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•1980•References: 10

This study examines the effects of social resources on recovery and perceived sense of control among the physically disabled. Data were obtained from personal interviews with 770 non‐institutionalized disabled adults. Two types of social resources are distinguished: those derived from primary group affiliations and those derived from secondary (formal) group relationships. Secondary group sources of supportive services for the disabled may be nec…

  • The Development and Role of Sunken Field Agriculture on the Peruvian Coast

    Richard T Smith•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1979•Cited by: 9•References: 6

In a most improbable area for agricultural development, pre-Hispanic peoples on the desert coast of Peru dug below the surface sand to reach a moist zone for crop growing. A wide range of crops was produced including maize, beans, gourds, roots and fruit crops, cotton and reeds. It is also likely xhatquinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) was grown. In view of the richness of offshore resources, it seems likely that coastal agriculture, particularly that of…

  • The Post-Glacial Development of Vegetation and Soils in Northern Cardiganshire

    Richard T Smith, James A Taylor•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1969•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The paper describes work on soil profiles derived from Lower Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks in an area centred on the Plynlimon (Pumlumon) upland, West Wales. Pollen and spore counts were undertaken on selected soil profiles and the data analysed. Profiles studied include soils of moorland plateaux, the peaty podsols and their variants, as well as soils of sloping land west of, and marginal to, the plateaux. It is suggested that Post-glacial vegeta…
