    Open Access•Stephen Hansell, David Mechanic•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•1991•Cited by: 7•References: 3

A longitudinal study of older adult members of a large health maintenance organization found that higher levels of body awareness were associated with significant longitudinal decreases in self-assessed health over time, controlling for physical and psychological health status, sex, age, and education. Also, psychological distress was a significant antecedent of body awareness. Individuals with higher distress had significant longitudinal increas…

  • Adolescent Drug Use, Psychological Distress, and Physical Symptoms

Stephen Hansell, Helene Raskin White•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1991•Cited by: 10

The longitudinal interrelationships among general drug use, psychological distress, and physical symptoms were investigated in a three wave panel study of a community sample of adolescents interviewed when they were 12, 15, and 18 years of age. Results did not provide any support for the hypothesis that adolescents use drugs in general to cope with pre-existing psychological distress and physical symptoms. In contrast, the results supported the h…

David Mechanic, Stephen Hansell•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1989•Cited by: 31

The relative effects of family conflict and divorce on the well-being of adolescents were examined in a longitudinal study of a heterogeneous community sample. Higher levels of family conflict were associated with increases in adolescents' depressed mood, anxiety, and physical symptoms over time. In contrast, neither recent divorce nor earlier divorce was associated with longitudinal changes in any health outcomes. Also, adolescents living in int…

  • Adolescent Competence, Psychological Well-Being, and Self-Assessed Physical Health

David Mechanic, Stephen Hansell•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•1987•Cited by: 31

Longitudinal data from 1,057 adolescents in 19 public schools indicated that self-assessments of physical health were influenced by competence in several important areas of adolescent life and by psychological well-being, but not by physical symptoms. Specifically, adolescents who reported higher levels of school achievement and more participation in sports and other exercise assessed their health to be better over a one-year period, when we cont…

    Stephen Hansell•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1985•Cited by: 7

This study investigated the association between the structure of adolescent friendship networks, and distress responses in a private school. The 254 students in grades nine through twelve completed sociometric questionnaires, and measures of physiological, psychological, and behavioral distress. Results showed, first, that indices of network structure were more strongly associated with distress responses than were sociometric counts of relationsh…

Stephen Hansell, Jack Sparacino et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1984•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Ego development responses to 12-item written questionnaires were compared with responses to 12-item telephone questionnaires. Reliabilities of both response modalities, as measured by interrater agreement and internal consistency, were very similar to those reported in earlier research. Mean telephone responses were rated significantly lower than mean written responses, but the absolute difference was less than one half of an ego development stag…

The hypothesis that placement in a noncollege curriculum track causes losses in self-esteem and increased delinquency was examined in a nationally representative, longitudinal sample of over 1600 high school boys. A status attainment perspective from the sociology of education was used to conceptualize tracking influences on delinquency suggested by delinquency theories, and path models were employed to explore various assumptions about the devel…

A factor analysis revealed four clusters of items dealing with teacher perceptions of elementary school students' achievement and effort, and teachers' expectations for future student success in high school and college. Controlling for teachers' sex, education and yea…

  • Ego Development and Peer Friendship Networks

    Stephen Hansell•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•1981•Cited by: 3

This study investigated the relationship between ego development and the structure of students' friendships. Based on ego development theory, the reciprocation offriendship choices in dyads was predicted to peak at middle ego development levels and be lower at high and lo-w levels of ego development. Friendship choices between peer cliques were expected to be low at middle range ego levels but high at the higher and lower ego levels. Results supp…

    Stephen Hansell, Robert E Slavin•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•1981•Cited by: 8

This study investigated the structure of new cross-race friendships caused by a cooperative learning intervention. The sample was 402 seventh and eighth grade students in 12 inner-city language arts classrooms. Classes were randomly assigned to cooperative …
