Rationality, Inequity, and Civic Vitality: The Distribution of Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facilities in the Southeast
This study examines the distribution of commercial treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs) of hazardous waste in the southeast. Four hypotheses are tested: (1) economic rationality, (2) social inequity, (3) civic capital, and (4) scientific rationality. The data set is a match of records on operational TSDFs and large quantity generators (LQGs) of hazardous waste from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, demographic data from the…
Drowning in Inequalities: Swimming and Social Justice
The authors argue that age, sex, and racial differentials in swimming participation are conditioned by the availability of swimming infrastructure and the principle of social exclusivity that limits access of lower status groupings, even where pools and programs are available. In turn, the authors argue that participation in swimming and where that activity occurs (pool versus open water) affect life chances (accidental drowning rates) across sta…
The Globalization of a Minor Sport: The Diffusion and Commodification of Masters Swimming
We examine the global spread of Masters Swimming (MS) focusing on the economic, social, and demographic conditions associated with its initiation in the United States and its international growth. We characterize MS as a modern sport and look at its subcultural form, organizational structure, practices, and early pattern of organizational growth from bottom to top. Then we describe the top down role of La Federation Internationale de Natation Ama…

Reasons for Participating in a Serious Leisure Career: Comparison of Canadian and U.S. Masters Swimmers
For Canadian and United States Masters swimmers we examined how career contingencies (age, sex, familial status, and stage of swimming experience) were linked to benefits derived (personal and social rewards - importance of reasons for participation) from their pursuit of this serious leisure sport career. From questionnaire data on convenience samples of Masters swimmers, Canadian (337) and U.S. (363), we identified reasons for adult participati…

Convergence in rural-urban patterns of nuptiality and mortality: A life table update
"Based on 1979-1981 and 1989-1991 [U.S.] vital registration and 1980 and 1990 census data, we construct increment-decrement life tables for rural and urban males and females. The analysis is centered on 1980 and 1990 and describes urban-rural differences in patterns of mortality and nuptiality by age and sex. Our research updates an earlier study that described urban-rural mortality and marital transition patterns for Tennessee, 1970. The 1980 an…
Graphic Presentations of Church Attendance Using General Social Survey Data
Cohort Surfaces: A Graphic Approach to Teaching Social Stability and Change
A graphic approach to cohort analysis using quasi-scenic rendering of cohort surfaces and contour graphs produced with GRAFTOOL is discussed as a teaching strategy for understanding stability and change in life course patterns. We describe the lessons learned from each graphic image, and note courses and topics for which this strategy is applicable. We outline the classroom approach to teaching cohort analysis and orienting students to graphic vi…
Competitive Swimming Careers through the Life Course
Using a convenience sample of 299 Masters swimmers, we examined the timing of youthful and adult phases of competitive swimming careers. Gender similarities and differences in the ages of youthful entry and exits and of adult resumption were identified. The ages associated with phases of swimming careers corresponded with age norms for participation in nonsport careers (educational, occupational, and familial) for males and married females
Mexican American Fertility Patterns
This book reports the effects of generation on fertility and the relationship between linguistic patterns and fertility among Mexican Americans. Using 3 data sources--1970 and 1980 US Census Public Use Sample data and the 1976 Survey of Income and Education data--a comparative framework is constructed which evaluates the relative merits of and group hypotheses as they pertain to Mexican American and black fertility behavior. Chapters include 1) a…

The epidemiologic transition in a frontier town — Manti, Utah: 1849–1977
Census reports and information in burial records of Manti, Utah from 1849 to July 1977 are examined in order to (1)document mortality trends and differentials by age, sex, cause‐of‐death, and seasonality as Manti passed from a frontier settlement to a rural agricultural community; and (2) ascertain whether the shifts in the cause‐of‐death structure follow those patterns outlined by Omran (1971, 1974, 1977) in his theory of the epidemiologic trans…

Open and closed birth intervals for once-married spouse-present white women
Using the 1970 1/1,000 Public Use Sample of the U.S. population, the relationships of the closed and open birth intervals with parity and mother’s age, with parity and marital duration and with children ever born/marital duration and mother’s age are analyzed. These findings both replicate and expand on Srinivasan’s earlier research on the open interval. The open interval is more sensitive as an index of marital fertility when marital duration an…
The Bogue-Palmore Technique for Estimating Direct Fertility Measures From Indirect Indicators as applied to Tennessee Counties, 1960 and 1970
Bogue and Palmore’s technique for estimating direct fertility measures from indirect indicators IS applied to the 95 counties of Tennessee 1960 and 1970. Findings based on these data tentatively suggest that this technique may be better suited for cross-national research than for analysis of small population units. It is recommended that the “own child” method is more appropriate for estimating fertility when utilizing data on counties
Incidence of childlessness for United States women, cohorts born 1891–1945
By following Ryders technique for analyzing trends in fertility across cohorts and modifying his technique through the computation of zero parities for cohorts by individual years as well as updating his data series cohort estimates of childlessness can be obtained. This paper follows this strategy and addresses 3 questions: What changes have occurred over time across cohorts in the levels of childlessness among women who have reached age fifty? …

Mormonism and Birth Planning: The discrepancy between church authorities' teachings and lay attitudes
This paper examines the traditional stance taken by Mormon Church authorities regarding birth control. Special attention is given to the theological context used as a justification for pro-natalist benefits. Previous research which treats Mormons as a special sub-group in KAP studies is reviewed. We find that while the stance of Church leaders has been consistent historically, the college-educated Mormon is more accepting of family planning to-da…
Child-spacing differentials for white and non-white couples according to educational level of attainment for the 1/1000 sample of the United States population in 1960
Despite previous research on the relationship between husband's or wife's level of educational attainment and childbearing and child spacing, relatively few data exist on couples' combined educational attainment which compares whites and non-whites. Further, to date a systematic exploration of available information contained on the 1/1,000 sample of the United States population in 1960 has not been undertaken. This paper utilizes these data and i…
