An Application of Natural Language Processing Techniques to Detect Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Crime as Reported in the News
The unavailability and inaccessibility of official crime data in developing countries present a major challenge for crime analysis. This study explores the potential of transforming news media content into a structured dataset suitable for pattern analysis in Georgetown, Guyana. A corpus of 5,487 newspaper articles was systematically extracted across three different newspaper platforms using crime-related keywords. In order to reveal the spatio-t…
Teaching and Learning Drones
In this article, we examine the experiences of five undergraduate students who enrolled in an introductory drones class to learn how to operate drones, gather geospatial information, and analyze the data generated through student flights. We employed open-ended surveys to gather data from the students about their expectations, experiences, and reflections from the class. Our analysis focused on three primary objectives: (1) an examination of stud…
Testing the Law of Crime Concentration in Georgetown, Guyana
A consistent finding in criminology is that crime occurs and is concentrated at micro places within cities. To date, most efforts that revealed crime at micro places were completed for developed world settings. Here we draw on newspaper data to examine whether the law of crime concentration is relevant to the developing world city of Georgetown, Guyana. Our analysis showed that robberies and murders were concentrated on 2.77% and 1.96% of the cit…
Drones and Geography
Drones have equipped geographers with the capacity to collect high-quality geospatial data at multiple spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions. Although the adoption of drones is increasing across geography, knowledge of those using this technology and their practices is limited. The purpose of this article is to understand who is using drones in geography, how they are using them, and what future opportunities exist. We collected data from e…
An exploratory analysis of stakeholders and their influence on human–Jaguar conflict in Guyana
Cattle farmer–jaguar conflict receives the greatest attention in Latin America’s human–wild cat interactions discourse. Yet, other economic activities in the region, such as gold mining, threaten jaguar survivability and receive little attention. Working in Guyana, where economic activities beyond cattle farming predispose conflict, this research note identifies stakeholders and describes how their activities trigger conflict and its spatial dist…

Mangroves in the global climate and environmental mix
Mangroves provide numerous ecosystem services to humanity and yet remain some of the most undervalued and poorly treated ecosystems in the world. Mangroves are distributed in the land-sea interphase of tropical and subtropical coasts in 123 countries. Up until two decades ago, scholars have focused on the provisioning, supporting, and cultural services associated with mangroves, but recent efforts have pivoted towards mangroves role in regulating…
Insights into the Nature and Spatial Distribution of Guyanese Crime
Violent crime continues to plague Latin American societies, but reporting is not uniform across the region. Here we examine crime for Guyana, a country lacking coverage in the literature, using unofficial data. Newspaper archives for the month of January over the period 1997–2016 were used to describe several factors, including the rate of violent crime, crime’s spatial distribution, and its relationship to gold prices. More than 82% of Guyanese …
Space, Place, and Hunting Patterns among Indigenous Peoples of the Guyanese Rupununi Region
