Daguerre’s Abstraction
The understanding of abstraction in so-called Western art theory is usually a narrative 'towards' purism or universalism. The impact of photography on these discourses is usually related to this in its function of representational realism, and attempt to join modernist discourses through a tern to abstraction. Photography is more rarely examined in terms of its contribution to abstraction. This paper turns to that question by looking at the early…
Marxism, Religion and Ideology
Cartesian Robotics
This essay looks closely at René Descartes's physiological theory, and especially his theorization of the nerves and the brain as an information-processing system, in order to offer a new interpretation of cognition within his philosophy. Rather than opposing mind and body, Descartes showed how the operations of the soul interrupted the automatic cognitive processes of the body to provide adaptive flexibility for the human organism as a whole

The Memory of Photography
Photography is often linked to memory as an issue of its failure. While the question of what is missing or what cannot be seen in photographs emphasizes what might be called a negative relation to memory, this nevertheless obscures the productive role of photographic images within culture as mnemonic devices. This paper addresses the specific contribution that the invention of photography has made to the relation of memory and history. The conseq…

The objects recovered from the Swan have already been the subject of a number of publications. The aim of this article is to provide an in-depth study of the pocket-watch, using Three Dimensional Computed Tomography (3D-CT) X-ray scanning. The structural information that survived exceeded expectations and made a virtual reconstruction of the mechanism possible. The very high resolution provided by the scan enabled the engraving of the maker's nam…

Does the Date Still Matter
1066 was once regarded as the date everyone knew. It remains widely known among the large numbers of the general public with an interest in history. This article suggests that popular perceptions of 1066 are a range of at times confused memories and that so-called academic history has in the last fifty years had little impact on them. It acknowledges that revolutionary changes in contemporary historians' approaches to the past have made 1066 less…
Crisis Between the Wars: Derrida and the Origins of Undecidability
Jacques Derrida's turn to the political took deconstruction in a new direction this past decade. Central to this later political writing was the concept of undecidability. This essay traces the use of undecidability in Derrida's work, from its early appearance in textual theory to its redeployment in his political philosophy, before tracing out the origins of this idea in interwar thought. The argument is that this idea was already highly politic…
