    Fei‐wen Liu, Fei-Wen Liu•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 11

A script traditionally used exclusively among women, nüshu (women's writing), was first identified in southern rural China in 1982. Its discovery opened a new window onto women's lifeworlds and drew many scholars to explore its ethnographic and theoretical significance. Local authorities paid no attention to this "women's script" until the 2000s. Scholarly investigation and governmental involvement over the past three decades have shaped nüshu's …

    Fei-Wen Liu•ARTICLE•NAN Nü•2004

In this article, I investigate how peasant women in Jiangyong County of southern Hunan defined and practiced a female-specific written script known as nüshu ('female writing'). With an emphasis on sisterhood relationships, I explore how women employed nüshu to construct meaning, experience autonomy, and acknowledge the androcentric impositions made upon them, which in turn highlights the dual nature of nüshu literacy. On the one hand, nüshu empow…
