Replies to Nicholas Walker, Taylor Carman, and Peter Gordon
In what follows, I present my replies to Nicholas Walker, Taylor Carman, and Peter Gordon's reflections on my What Would Be Different? Figures of Possibility in Adorno. I begin by summarizing what is at stake in the book. My reply to Nicholas Walker and Taylor Carman focusses on Adorno's criticisms of Heidegger, who claims that the history of metaphysics has blocked our access to an “other beginning” for thinking. This prepares the ground for a c…
How can scientists and designers find ways of working together? A case study of playful learning to co-design visual interpretations of immunology concepts
In UK HE institutions there is a growing realisation and appreciation for academic disciplines to seek research partners beyond their own subject (QAA. 2018. Window on the weather: A case study in multi-platform visual communication design, with a relationship to Design Thinking
In February 2018, after three years of design and development work, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Weather launched its redesigned service across multiple platforms. The project involved new ways of cross-disciplinary communication design working across broadcast and digital services. This research examines these innovations and considers the transcorporeality of our relationship with weather forecasting. BBC Weather developed an icon…
Avalanche
What Would Be Different: Figures of Possibility in Adorno
At the intersection of metaphysics and social theory, this book presents and examines Adorno's unusual concept of possibility and aims to answer how we are to articulate the possibility of a redeemed life without lapsing into a vague and naïve utopianism
The Discovery of the Argyle Pipe, Western Australia: The World’s First Lamproite-Hosted Diamond Mine
Argyle diamond mine discovery is a tale of scientific exploration, belief, and persistence over a nine-year period from project formulation in 1971 to pipe discovery in 1979. Initial inspiration came from a suggestion that leucite lamproites that crop out in the Kimberley region of Western Australia were derived by differentiation from a kimberlite-like peridotite magma. A 200,000-km2-wide program of reconnaissance stream sampling was initiated i…

Cultural change in the creative industries: A case study of BBC graphic design from 1990–2011
Using his own experience as a witness and participant in the convulsion that the BBC, and specifically the BBC Graphic Design Department underwent, the author aims to illuminate the cultural change to the creative industries in many advanced industrialised countries that has occurred over the last 20 years. Many industries in the past have undergone similar ruptures and transformations and they will again in the future. The author hopes to draw l…

Cold, cold, warm: Autonomy, intimacy and maturity in Adorno
When Adorno refers to the concept of maturity (Mündigkeit), he generally means having the courage and the ability to use one’s own understanding independently of dominant heteronomous patterns of thought. This Kantian-sounding claim is essentially an exhortation: maturity demands self-liberation from heteronomy, i.e. autonomy. The problem, however, is that in spite of Adorno’s general endorsement of Kant’s definition of maturity, he ultimately re…
Adorno and Heidegger: Philosophical Questions
Adorno and Heidegger explores the conflictual history of two important traditions of twentieth-century European thought: the critical theory of Theodor W. Adorno and the ontology of Martin Heidegger. As is well known, there has been little productive engagement between these two schools of thought, in large measure due to Adorno's sustained and unanswered critique of Heidegger. Stemming from this critique, numerous political and philosophical bar…
