Staging Strings: Performance, (re)production and liveness in object-based spatial audio contexts
This article utilizes practice-research methods to explore two questions related to performance and meaning-making in live music contexts. It investigates how an interventionist approach to sound design and mixing can challenge expectations surrounding the nature of performance in Western art music. Specifically, the research explores how a focus on sound reinforcement as a series of non-neutral practices can highlight ideas and debates regarding…
Evaluating quality improvement at scale: A pilot study on routine reporting for executive board governance in a UK National Health Service organisation
BACKGROUND: Quality improvement (QI) in healthcare is a cultural transformation process. We explored how routine reporting could be developed to aid visibility of the process for QI governance. METHOD: A retrospective evaluation of QI projects in a large healthcare organisation was conducted. We used an online survey so that the data accrual process resembled routine reporting to help identify implementation challenges. A purposive sample of QI p…
The lived experience of a novel disruptive therapy in a group of men and boys with haemophilia A with inhibitors: Emi & Me
BACKGROUND: People with haemophilia A and inhibitors (PwHi) suffer more orthopaedic complications, bleeding and pain than those without inhibitors. The advent of emicizumab as a prophylactic treatment has led to a reduction in bleed frequency and a significant improvement in overall quality of life. No research to date has examined the nature of this improvement on treated individuals and their families. AIMS: The Emi & Me study aims to capture t…

Not our ‘Dunedin sound: Responses to the historicisation of Dunedin popular music
The music that was produced in Dunedin, New Zealand, during the 1980's occupies a unique place in the global indie music canon. In writing about this supposed ‘Dunedin sound,' critics and scholars alike have fixated on the city's remoteness: it is believed to be distant from metropolitan centres of music industry power and influence, and consequently supported a subversive and democratised local music scene. This article explores the implications…
Translating Mouvement, Translating Movement
A particular problem arises for the translator when a word has no equivalent in the target language, because what it refers to is something that the speakers of that language simply do not think. The French term mouvement is a case in point. All French dictionaries give prominence to a definition of the term which relates it to impulse, sentiment and passion and characterizes it positively as a 'sign of life'. By contrast, although the OED record…

The Homage to Debussy at the Théâtre Des Champs-Elysées
Michael Holland presents an early and little-known article by Maurice Blanchot, whose subject is the memorial concert in honour of Claude Debussy which took place in Paris in June 1932, following the unveiling of a monument to the composer earlier in the day. Blanchot provides a detailed account of the concert, emphasising the international co-operation that lay behind the expression of national pride, and arguing, against the grain of contempora…
Blanchot and Gandhi
It was Romain Rolland who first introduced Gandhi to France. At home, Rolland had been a bête noire of the nationalist right since his pacifist declarations during the First World War. A major adversary was Henri Massis. For Massis, as for Catholic nationalists more generally, French civilisation was the foundation of the Western world, which is to say, of humanity itself. In their eyes, Asia and its representatives (Gandhi, Tagore) were the agen…
Responses and Interventions
Responses and Interventions (1946–98) Maurice Blanchot r Days of Hope by André Malraux. 'L'Espoir d'André Malraux', in L'Espagne libre, collection 'Actualité' (Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1946), 106–11. Blanchot's contribution to the first and only issue of a review founded by Georges Bataille, which was to be edited jointly by him, Blanchot and Jean Prévost. It isperhaps opportune to wonder why Malraux's novel about Spain is called 'Days of Hope'.1 The…
The Time of his Life
Throughout his life, contemporaries of Blanchot either sought to relegate his writing to the past, or else espoused it uncritically in a gesture akin to what Jean-Luc Nancy once called syncope. Blanchot thus divided his epoch in a way that was less a polarization than a struggle for the present in which thought takes place. Consequently, readers today in search of what makes Blanchot continue to be a contemporary find that the time of his writing…
Swing Revisited: The Swing Project
The Captain Swing riots were the most serious protest by agricultural labouring communities of the I9th century. Historiographically, the work of Hobsbawm and Rudé (I969) has remained the outstanding account of these riots. So much so that, since their groundbreaking study, relatively little work has been done on these events at an aggregate scale. However, local research has implied that the unrest was greater than even Hobsbawm and Rudé reporte…

Plink-Plunk ' Unforgetting The Present In Coetzee's Disgrace
Disgrace is first and foremost a work of literature. While its story acutely dramatizes what it is to be white in the new South Africa, the language of its narrative draws attention to its own literariness in a variety of ways, so as ultimately to relegate the defunct language of western masculinity to the past, and offer a new means of being in the present in relation to both language and the world

Part II. The Perseia Fountain House
In 1892 Tsountas in the course of exploration on the top of the ridge between the ‘Tomb of Clytemnestra’ and the Lion Gate found a painted circular cap of poros (o·61 m. in diameter), which from the cuttings in it clearly seems to have been connected with some form of installation for water (Plate 14, b ). It bears an inscription which as restored refers to Perseus. This inscribed cap Tsountas says he found among later ruins, but he did not speci…
