  • The Undying

    Galili Shahar•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2022

What conceptual merit does the undying – the one that does not die properly – hold? What form of life is left for those who do not achieve death, those that death (the right, the necessity – to die) was taken from them? The undying is a figure of thought; its traces can be found in ancient traditions, in myths and tales, in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew sources. The concept obtains new interpretations in modern writing. One (not the only) of its manif…

  • Narrentum and Being-Jewish: Kafka and Benjamin

    Galili Shahar•ARTICLE•Naharaim•2021

This essay examines the notion of Narrentum (foolishness) in Franz Kafka’s writings, reflecting Walter Benjamin’s engagement with the legacy of Kafka’s fools. The Narr , associated with playfulness, irony, and resistance, provides a comic perspective on the question of being-Jewish. Alongside its Germanic, mostly Baroque, heritage, the Narr incorporates traditional Jewish tropes, primarily rooted in Aggadic traditions. However, in Kafka’s world, …

  • Kafka’s Messages

    Galili Shahar•ARTICLE•Performance Research•2021

Reading Kafka's literature today, in Jerusalem/Al-Quds, presents us with a challenge. Reading Kafka ‘here and now’, following his ‘messages’, concealed in his prose, notes and letters, demands us to engage anew with our traditions. It calls us to reconsider the legacies of Kafka's own literature, revising European modernism, while studying Talmudic and Kabbalistic texts, learning Chassidic tales and reading Arabic and Persian stories. A ‘Kafkan’ …

Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2009. Pp. 336. My remarks on Idel’s book are written as a gesture of admiration. I have learned much from his book, which is filled with wisdom. Galili Shahar•ARTICLE•The Germanic Review Literature…•2008•Cited by: 3

The question of Hebrew, the conditions and possibilities of its "renaissance" and its rebirth as a secular language and a source of modern national discourse, was one of the central concerns of the Zionist enterprise around 1900. In his famous letter of December 1926 dedicated to Franz Rosenzweig and titled "Bekenntnis über unsere Sprache," Gershom Scholem expressed his anxiety with the Zionist project and reveals his apocalyptic view of the futu…
