Environmental and Social Factors Associated with High Chronic Kidney Disease Mortality Rates in Municipalities of Guatemala
The purpose of this study was to determine the association between social and environmental indicators and high mortality rates from chronic kidney disease (CKD) in municipalities of Guatemala. An ecological study of municipal-level factors associated with CKD mortality in Guatemala was conducted. Crude mortality rates were calculated for the 2009-2019 period for each of the country's 340 municipalities, by gender and age groups. Municipal-level …
Teaching Ethnography and Writing
We discuss our work as members of the interdisciplinary University of Denver Ethnography Lab (DUEL) in creating communities of practice through which students, faculty, and community partners engage in anthropology in action aimed at contributing to social justice and public good efforts. We highlight our work supporting socially engaged ethnographies by students in Writing Program courses. We also explain DUEL's outreach work with community part…

Building Community Through Ethnography in Action to Catalyze Student, Faculty, and Community Collaborations
Since its initial conception in 2017, the University of Denver Ethnography Lab (DUEL) has aimed to catalyze collaborations between students, faculty, and community organizations. Inspired by community-campus partnerships implemented in the past across the United States, DUEL seeks to cultivate a community of practice centered on ethnography in action, and to draw on strengths and opportunities specific to our university. In this article, we prese…
Neocolonial epidemiology
The relationship between public health practice and the fulfilment of the right to health is often assumed to be synergistic. With the goal of understanding how exactly this relationship happens, I studied the everyday practice of epidemiology in Guatemala, seeking to understand how it shapes and is shaped by the notion of health as a human right. Here I present findings from my ethnographic investigation of the Guatemalan Centro Nacional de Epid…

Anthropology of Epidemics in Emergency and Normal Times in Guatemala
Studying epidemics provides a privileged window for examining broader questions of social inequalities and the ways in which institutions reproduce or transform them. However, focusing just on the epidemic crisis during emergencies fails to acknowledge that the very definition of an epidemic depends on the work of epidemiologists during the times when there are no ongoing declared epidemic emergencies. During the inter-crisis periods, epidemiolog…
“That’s enough patients for everyone!”
BACKGROUND: Medical tourism has attracted considerable interest within the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region. Governments in the region tout the economic potential of treating foreign patients while several new private hospitals primarily target international patients. This analysis explores the perspectives of a range of medical tourism sector stakeholders in two LAC countries, Guatemala and Barbados, which are beginning to develop their…
Providers’ perspectives on inbound medical tourism in Central America and the Caribbean
BACKGROUND: Many governments and health care providers worldwide are enthusiastic to develop medical tourism as a service export. Despite the popularity of this policy uptake, there is relatively little known about the specific local factors prospectively motivating and informing development of this sector. OBJECTIVE: To identify common social, economic, and health system factors shaping the development of medical tourism in three Central America…
Local disease concepts relevant to the design of a community-based surveillance program for influenza in rural Guatemala
Bridging the divide between professional and community-based descriptive disease terminology, incorporating animal and human health responsiveness to common illnesses, and providing professional knowledge into the community-based networks were identified as addressable challenges to effective implementation of community-based surveillance
Abuse and discrimination towards indigenous people in public health care facilities
Addressing mistreatment in public health settings will involve tackling the prevalent forms of discrimination, including racism. This will likely require profound, complex and sustained interventions at the programmatic and policy levels beyond the strict realm of public health services. Future studies should assess the magnitude of the occurrence of episodes of maltreatment and racism within indigenous areas and also explore the providers' perce…

Changing Drug Markets Under New Intellectual Property Regimes
The intellectual property rules inscribed in the Central American Free Trade Agreement have generated concern about access to medicines. We examined the implementation of the new intellectual property regime by tracking the policies and practices in place across 4 Central American countries. Although all 4 were responding to the same requirements under the agreement, their implementation of intellectual property rules differed. Not only were inst…
