Inherent Tensions and Possibilities
Interculturality
This issue provides striking examples of how current educational policies and practices play a fundamental role in processes that constitute immigrant and ethnic minority children as ‘others’. This collective compendium not only interweaves theory and practice but also initiates a trans-Atlantic conversation about intercultural education embracing ethnographic cases from North America (Texas), South America (Bolivia) and Europe (Spain). These con…

The Pedagogy of Teaching Online Graduate Courses in the Program of Applied Anthropology
Perhaps one of the most recurring questions that we and others have asked about our online graduate program is: How do you foster critical thinking in an online classroom environment? Most of us were initially apprehensive about the idea of an Online Master's Program in Applied Anthropology because we felt that the critical dialogue characteristic of our face-to-face graduate classes might be lost in a virtual environment. In this article, we wou…
The Whys and Hows of an Online Applied Anthropology Program
The Department of Anthropology at the University of North Texas created the first master's program in applied anthropology offered in Texas, starting in 2000. At that time, the department had 6 full-time faculty members. The Department of Anthropology is part of the College of Public Affairs and Community Service, and shares the vision of interweaving academia and research to serve the community. In fact, given our experience with the undergradua…
Milpa As an Ideological Weapon
The article analyzes the phenomenon of tourism within the current globalizing and postmodern contexts. It is based on the cultural relationship between Chan Kom, a Maya community in the Yucatán Peninsula, and Cancún, the international tourist emporium. The tourist culture of Cancún embeds rules of production and consumption radically different from those encapsulated in the milpa or cornfield ideology that Maya experience in their communities. Th…

Two ethnographic examples are provided to document women's transformations through migration. The first case deals with Mexican women crossing Mexico's northern border into Texas. The second case focuses on Maya women crossing the rural border of a Maya community to urban Cancún. The core of the study is the analysis of …
