A Systems Approach to Improving Well-Being in Graduate Medical Education
The imperative to improve the well-being of graduate medical education (GME) trainees has been well documented. While existing interventions have largely centered on increasing individual trainee resilience, there has been less focus on the role of national health policy, economics, and the overall U.S. care delivery system in acting as antecedent contributors to burnout among learners. To explore the impact of these national system level factors…
Addressing population-level cancer data needs in northwestern Mexico
“South–South” partnerships forged between institutions in resource-constrained settings, usually in low- and middle-income countries, provide innovative frameworks for resource, knowledge, and expertise exchanges to address public health challenges in regions sharing similar contexts. Population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) and surveillance systems in low- and middle-income countries are essential for cancer control, yet they are scarce. In re…

How Studying Anthropology Changes Students
Student research fellows at three universities (Illinois State University, St. Mary's College of Maryland, and Wheaton College) conducted ethnographic research among peers in anthropology programs to better understand students' experiences in the major and their career goals. In this article, we highlight student narratives of personal and intellectual growth. We found that current majors had more to say about how they had been transformed by ant…
There's a Lot You Can Do with It
What do anthropology students think about their professional future? In what ways does the study of anthropology provide competencies or skills that will be useful in the workplace? Research fellows from Illinois State University, Indiana University, and St. Mary's College of Maryland conducted individual interviews, focus groups, or surveys of alumni or graduating seniors to examine narratives about the perceived usefulness of anthropology in se…

Empathy and Observed Anger and Aggression in Five‐Year‐Olds
In Roberts and Strayer (1996 ), we reported that emotional expressiveness and anger were important predictors of empathy for school‐age children, and that empathy strongly predicted prosocial behaviors aggregated across methods and sources. In this paper, we report how empathy was associated with direct observations of anger and aggression in peer play groups. Twenty‐four initially unacquainted five‐year‐old children (50% girls) were randomly ass…
Children's Anger, Emotional Expressiveness, and Empathy
In Roberts and Strayer (1996 ) we described how emotional factors were strongly related to children's empathy, which in turn strongly predicted prosocial behavior. This paper focuses on how these child emotional factors, assessed across methods and sources, related to parental factors (empathy, emotional expressiveness, encouragement of children's emotional expressiveness, warmth and control) for a subset of 50 two‐parent families from our earlie…
