  • Nordic Paths to Modernity

Risto Alapuro, Peter Hallberg et al.•BOOK•Nordic paths to modernity•2022

Within the growing attention to the diverse forms and trajectories of modern societies, the Nordic countries are now widely seen as a distinctive and instructive case. While discussions have centred on the 'Nordic model' of the welfare state and its record of adaptation to the changing global environment of the late twentieth century, this volume's focus goes beyond these themes. The guiding principle here is that a long-term historical-sociologi…

  • Liberal constitutionalism and its critics

    Open Access•Rune Slagstad•CHAPTER•Constitutionalism and Democracy•1988

Carl Schmitt occupies a special position within the field of modern legal and political theory. On the one hand, Schmitt is one of the foremost specialists in liberal constitutionalism; but on the other hand, he is also one of its keenest critics. His Verfassungslehre of 1928 dissects the constitution of the Weimar Republic, interpreting it along the lines drawn up by the German constitutional tradition from Wilhelm von Humboldt and Lorenz von St…

The eleven essays in this volume, supplemented by an editorial introduction, centre around three overlapping problems. First, why would a society want to limit its own sovereign power by imposing constitutional constraints on democratic decision-making? Second, what are the contributions of democracy and constitutions to efficient government? Third, what are the relations among democracy, constitutionalism, and private property? This comprehensiv…

  • Democracy and Social Planning

Open Access•Jon Elster, Trond Berg et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1980

The Norwegian Research Council for Science and the Humanities has sponsored a research project entitled 'Democracy and Social Planning'. It is basically a study of political history and political philosophy and was motivated by the belief that any viable democracy must continually question its own foundations. Politicians implement democracy and planning and social scientists study how they work in practice, but prior to both is the conceptual an…
