In this article we argue that “smart” work spaces are created through access to wireless networks and mobile cloud computing collaboration software. Yet the power relations embedded in these overlapping physical and cyberspaces function to control the spatial and temporal fragmentation of related work activities. Through a review of the literature, we first describe how scholars have considered the relationship between space, technology, and the …
Assessing “green” and “resilient” building features using a purposeful systems approach
Modeling Real Estate Market Responses to Climate Change in the Coastal Zone
Changing flood risks threaten the value of billions of dollars worth of coastal real estate as well as the viability of coastal communities. This paper presents an agent-based model to capture some of the main features of the housing market that emerges from interactions between autonomous buyers and sellers. We use this model to investigate the adaptive responses of real estate markets to changing patterns of flooding and alternative flood insur…
What I Learned from the Recession [Policy Perspectives]
I still have my job and home. Nonetheless this recession has taught me some very direct lessons about economics. Like many of you, I now know to spend more prudently, save more, and avoid taking on too much debt. But what about the big picture? What causes the economic fluctuations that give us our booms and busts? Do we know more about them than we did a century ago, or even three years ago? Here are some of the explanations that economists have…
Green Niche Market Development
This article introduces a multiagent simulation framework for investigating the emergence of niche markets for environmentally innovative products. It clarifies how consumer preferences, business strategy, and government policy interact during market development. The framework allows investigation of the effects of uncertainty and agents’ corresponding coping strategies. We describe the model, illustrate how it works when applied to the case of h…
Deliberating on Statewide Energy Targets
This article reflects on a process of analytic deliberation about the future energy economy of New Jersey. Scenario analysis looking forward thirty years identifies tradeoffs and synergies among environmental, economic, and security objectives identified by stakeholders. Modest, unilateral greenhouse gas reductions seem affordable and may improve energy security. More dramatic, long-term greenhouse gas reductions seem less feasible given current …
While the Window is Open on Global Warming….[Policy Perspectives]
Asserts that the time to act on global warming is now
New Jersey Acts on Energy and Climate Change [Living with Technology]
An unusual aspect of this conference was its focus on state-level energy and climate policies. The lack of federal leadership on these issues within the U.S.A. has opened a window of opportunity at the state level for policy entrepreneurs. California acted in 2005 with an executive order establishing greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, ratified in 2006 by the state legislature. New Jersey acted in 2007, helped along by the fact-finding, ta…
