Porous Conservation: The Complex History of Residents in National Parks in Latin America
This article analyzes the changing relations between national parks and people in Latin America between the 1930s and the present. In this region, conservation policies initially showed flexibility, eventually adopted a restrictive model but for the most part failed to enforce it, and, after political struggles to expand rights and benefits, developed alternative conservation initiatives. Rather than fortresses, these historical eras demonstrate …
Before Biodiversity: Trajectories of National Parks in Latin America (1930s-1980s)
Almost a century ago, long before biodiversity expressed a scientific value for nature, Latin American countries began establishing national parks. Today, they represent over 6 percent of Latin America's landmass. By considering national park creation across a broad regional span and six crucial decades, this article explains a mode of state formation focused on caring for nature instead of just exploiting it. It examines how national parks expan…

A Living Past
Though still a relatively young field, the study of Latin American environmental history is blossoming, as the contributions to this definitive volume demonstrate. Bringing together thirteen leading experts on the region, A Living Past synthesizes a wide range of scholarship to offer new perspectives on environmental change in Latin America and the Spanish Caribbean since the nineteenth century. Each chapter provides insightful, up-to-date synthe…

School-based sexuality education in Portugal: Strengths and weaknesses
Portugal, like many other countries, faces obstacles regarding school-based sexuality education. This paper explores Portuguese schools’ approaches to implementing sexuality education at a local level, and provides a critical analysis of potential strengths and weaknesses. Documents related to sexuality education in a convenience sample of 89 schools were analysed and findings confirm both the results of the few existing Portuguese studies on the…
Conservation Memories: Vicissitudes of a Biodiversity Conservation Project in the Rainforests of Colombia, 1992-1998
Based primarily on personal memories and conversations with participants, this article discusses a turning point in the long history of nature conservation as it played out in one of the biodiversity hot spots of South America. In the mid-1990s, after the Earth Summit in Rio, conservation initiatives moved beyond protected areas and called for the participation of local communities. Proyecto Biopacífico, the first biodiversity conservation projec…
Of the studies that grew out of the 1990s redefinition of Latin American nations as multicultural, most focus on the struggles of indigenous groups and the extension of their rights. Odile Hoffmann’s insightful book centers on black people, bringing together the literature on multiculturalism with that on blackness and race relations. Colombia’s 1991 constitution and the legislation that followed stands out in the Latin American context for conce…
Recordando a Saturio.

Mapping the Colombian Conflict
In the following pages, I present 10 maps that contribute to recent efforts to map the Colombian conflict. They also provide a complement to the articles on Colombia in this special issue of the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. The first two maps are meant simply to give an overview of Colombia's basic geography. The following seven depict the country's armed conflict, and the last shows areas of coca and poppy cultivatio…
