  • Beyond Balkanism: The Scholarly Politics of Region Making

    Diana Mishkova•BOOK•Beyond Balkanism•2018

In recent years, western discourse about the Balkans, or “balkanism,” has risen in prominence. Characteristically, this strand of research sidelines the academic input in the production of western representations and Balkan self-understanding. Looking at the Balkans from the vantage point of “balkanism” has therefore contributed to its further marginalization as an object of research and the evisceration of its agency. This book reverses the pers…

  • Liberalism and Tradition in the Nineteenth-Century Balkans: Toward History and Methodology of Political Transfer

    Open Access•Diana Mishkova•ARTICLE•East European Politics and…•2012•References: 3

The article sets off from a discussion of some methodological and theoretical issues pertinent to the study of ideological and institutional transfer between “centre” and “periphery” in nineteenth-century Europe. While taking into account the asymmetry in radiation and reception, it probes into the (Balkan) periphery’s political and cultural agency in reformulating and re-institutionalizing the “western model.” Rather than simply tracing movement…

  • The Politics of Regionalist Science: The Balkans as a Supranational Space in Late Nineteenth to Mid-Twentieth Century Academic Projects

    Diana Mishkova•ARTICLE•East Central Europe•2012•Cited by: 1

The article looks into the various scholarly (and disciplinary) conceptualizations of the Balkans/Southeastern Europe, which were spawned within the region itself prior to World War II. These regionalist schemes drew heavily on political values and relied on political support, while at the same time seeking to spearhead and legitimize political decisions or reformulate (geo)political visions. The article discusses the political implications of th…

  • The Balkans as an Idée-Force: Scholarly Projections of the Balkan Cultural Area

    Open Access•Diana Mishkova•ARTICLE•Civilisations•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 9

The bulk of literature on the Balkans which has appeared since 1989 has made a lot of the stereotyped Western discourse about the region during the last two centuries. Local production of regional discourses, on the other hand, has been usually interpreted in terms of internalization of or mirror reactions to the Balkan stigmata. Typically, these studies concentrate on journalistic and ideological discourses, while there have been few attempts at…

  • What is in Balkan History? Spaces and Scales in the Tradition of Southeast-European Studies

    Diana Mishkova•ARTICLE•Southeastern Europe•2010

This article takes a distance from the debate about 'symbolic geographies' and structural definitions of historical spaces as well as from surveying discrete disciplinary traditions or political agendas of regionalist scholarship in and on Southeastern Europe. Its purpose instead has been two-fold. On the one hand, to bring to light a preexistent but largely suppressed and un-reflected tradition of regionalist scholarship with the hope that this …

  • We, the People: Politics of National Peculiarity in Southeastern Europe

    Diana Mishkova•BOOK•We, the People•2009

Analyzes the processes of nation-building in nineteenth and early-twentieth-century south-eastern Europe. A product of transnational comparative teamwork, this collection represents a coordinated interpretation based on ten varied academic cultures and traditions.

  • Symbolic Geographies and Visions of Identity: A Balkan Perspective

    Open Access•Diana Mishkova•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Theory•2008•References: 10

The aim of this article is to interrogate the current mainstream interpretation of the relations between the Balkans and the West by exploring the agencies of the transmission of knowledge through which the Balkans became familiar with the West. Interest is focused on how concepts about 'us' and the 'other', cultural and social self-definitions were historically mediated by concepts of Europe. Issues of cultural transfer form a point of departure…
