  • The dependency‐autonomy paradox

Open Access•Karl Agius, Samantha Chaperon•ARTICLE•International Journal of Tourism…•2023

Debates on island tourism have challenged the inevitability of underdevelopment in peripheral islands. A paradox of geopolitical dependency but optimal autonomy has been proposed where tourism can create a ‘virtuous periphery syndrome’. This study used a dependency theory lens and a core‐periphery framework to analyse stakeholders' perspectives on this, in two Mediterranean archipelagos. The most peripheral islands experienced the highest levels …

  • Island settings and their influence on geographical research methods

    Open Access•Karl Agius•ARTICLE•Geographical Research•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 27

This study presents lessons learned from the application of mixed methods during three field visits to central Mediterranean islands over an eight-year period to learn about and from visitors who voluntarily paid to experience ecotourism. The study outlines various challenges encountered in research in small island settings. Such challenges include logistical difficulties to reach islands, including those originating from weather conditions, diff…

  • What's in a Name? The Impact of Disasters on Islands' Reputations

    Open Access•Karl Agius, Godfrey Baldacchino•ARTICLE•Shima•2022

Disasters and their aftermath can leave an enduring, negative impact on the image of tourism destinations. This paper presents research conducted in relation to Giglio (site of the January 2011 Costa Concordia shipwreck) and Ustica (associated with the June 1980 crash of Itavia Flight 870) in order to study the impact of these two disasters on the tourism industry of these two small Italian islands. Methods employed include content analysis of ar…

  • The Ecotourism Hub

    Open Access•Karl Agius•ARTICLE•Shima•2022

Notwithstanding their ecotourism potential, small peripheral islands have been closely associated with the enjoyment of sun, sea and sand (3S) as their major tourism product. Fieldwork was conducted in a group of islands/archipelagos collectively known as the Maltese-Sicilian archipelago to identify marketing challenges. Interviews were held with stakeholders to assess their views on the use of a joint cross-border marketing strategy to overcome …

  • Doorway to Europe

    Open Access•Karl Agius•ARTICLE•Journal of Marine and Island…•2021•References: 5

Lampedusa is today best known in relation to migration. The island has confronted one migration crisis after the other for the past three decades, resulting in extensive media coverage. Whereas Lampedusa, a small island in the central Mediterranean region, has an economy mainly based on tourism, its name remains associated with migration, which is believed to negatively impact the island’s image and the performance of its tourism sector. On the o…

  • Splendid isolation

    Open Access•Karl Agius, Francesco Sindico et al.•ARTICLE•Island Studies Journal•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 1

Islandness is often considered to be a disadvantage. However, it has helped the residents of islands to delay, deter, and, in some cases, totally insulate themselves from COVID-19. While islanders have been quick to lock themselves down, this has had a tremendous impact on their connectivity and on tourism, which in many cases is their major economic sector. Yet, the association of islands with being safe, “COVID-19 free” zones has helped these s…

  • Small islands as ecotourism destinations

    Open Access•Karl Agius, Nadia Theuma et al.•ARTICLE•Island Studies Journal•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 6

A prerequisite for ecotourism development is the presence of natural environments, normally exhibited in protected areas, which serve as ecotourism venues. Little attention has been given to Mediterranean islands in terms of ecotourism. In this paper, nine islands in the central Mediterranean region were studied through a case study approach to investigate their potential as ecotourism destinations, taking into account the presence of protected a…
