  • Kontinuitäten im Bruch – die Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung um 1933

    Open Access•Anna Seidel•ARTICLE•Kulturwissenschaftliche Zeitschrift•2025

This is an article about the communist weekly Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung (AIZ), the second most widely circulated illustrated paper during the late Weimar Republic. By examining research from various fields, contemporary sources, and the paper itself, I explore how AIZ represented its network of worker photographers, well-known intellectuals, writers, colporteurs, and, importantly, its readers. The article also discusses AIZ’s successes and it…

    Open Access•Anna Seidel•ARTICLE•Porównania•2025

This article explores the spatial and linguistic crises faced by Ukrainian writers in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of 2022. Through the analysis of three diaries—Andrey Kurkov’s Diary of an Invasion, Yevgenia Belorusets’ Anfang des Krieges, and Jelena Jeremejewa’s Seit September will ich nach Kiew—it examines the phenomenon of exophony, or writing in a foreign language, as a response to war and forced migration. The study shows how these…

Cities are relationally produced social spaces and in constant flux due to the ever-changing everyday spatial practices that produce and condition them. At the same time, they can become concepts abstracted into symbolic, monolithic ideas, pawns in political or historiographic narratives. Consequently, their death or survival in states of exception can become a substitute for the victorious or unsuccessful struggle for certain values or political…

    Open Access•Anna Seidel•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2020

Alfred Lichtwark (1852–1914) was the first director (1886–1914) of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. At his personal instigation, a sculpture collection was founded. Focusing on contemporary sculpture, he became a pioneer in the museum world. Lichtwark aimed at introducing sculpture to a wider public: he considered contemporary medals and plaquettes to be the most suitable material for his purpose, and consequently he initiated the sculpture collection i…

  • The Emperor and His Councillor

    Anna Seidel, Lothar Von Falkenhausen•ARTICLE•Cahiers d Extrême-Asie•2008

During her lifetime, Anna Seidel (1938-1991) was much appreciated by her anglophone colleagues, and her ideas continue to exert a profound influence on Taoist studies in the English-speaking world today. In this light, it is surprising that her most important book-length publication, La divinisation de Lao-tseu dans le taoïsme des Han, published in 1969, has never been made available in English. This is not for want of an intention to do so, at l…
