Natural and human-induced ecosystem change in SE Europe since AD 1700 derived from a partially varved sediment record from Lake Vouliagmeni (Greece)
To reconstruct naturally and anthropogenically induced environmental change in SE Europe since the Little Ice Age, we have examined five partially varved sediment cores from coastal Lake Vouliagmeni, Greece. Our reconstructions are based on a multi-proxy approach including microfacies analysis, X-ray fluorescence core scanning, radionuclide dating ( 210 Pb, 137 Cs, and 241 Am), and palynological analysis (pollen, spores, and dinoflagellate cysts)…
Palette
Slate palettes are an important object category for the material culture in Egypt during the sixth to third millennia bce . Made of a range of different stones, they are found in both tombs and settlements. They were likely to have been used to mix pigment for the ritual adornment of the body. Bigger ceremonial objects might have played a role as image‐carriers and ex‐voti in early temples.
Remembering Snofru
During their excavation work at the Fifth Dynasty mortuary temple of Raneferef the Czech mission found some inscribed stone vessel fragments that refer to the former king Seneferu but not to Raneferef himself. While working on the Abusir material in the Egyptian Museum in Leipzig, one stone vessel fragment made of diorite gneiss could be identified as also being inscribed with the name of Seneferu. It is assumed that this one belongs to one of th…

The so‐called slate palettes are objects of special interest, as they shed light on the development of culture and media in Predynastic Egypt.
Prunk-Schminkpaletten aus der Formativen Phase Altägyptens. Neue Überlegungen zur Einteilung und Deutung Einer Fundkategorie
In the following article we present some new thoughts on a category of objects long discussed in Egyptology. As 'Ceremonial Slate Palettes' we define stone palettes, mostly made of greywacke, that show a certain decoration and are therefore put in a ritual context. In most cases their original contexts are unknown because almost all objects lack an archaeological documentation. One of the aims of this re-view is to present some new ideas concerni…
Zu Einigen Aegyptiaca aus dem Nationalmuseum für Rumänische geschichte, Bukarest (Rumänien)
In the following article we will publish six pre dynastic objects of pottery given to the Museum as a donation by Mihail C. Sutzu. Ali items are made of Nile clay and date back to the stages of Naqada I-II. It looks like as they could all belong to the same tomb inventory. Just one pot, belonging to Petrie's P-Ware is a bit younger in date (Naqada II/III). The description and dating as well as a try of interpretation follows a short critical summ…
Iroquoian Archaeology
Infrastructures are material forms that allow for the possibility of exchange over space. They are the physical networks through which goods, ideas, waste, power, people, and finance are trafficked. In this article I trace the range of anthropological ...Read More
