Failed Masculinity
Masculine authority in literary narratives often appears stable and self-evident, yet moments of its breakdown reveal the conditions under which legitimacy is granted or withheld. This article examines masculine failure in Hamlet and The Great Gatsby by asking how historically distinct regimes of legitimacy shape the intelligibility of masculine performance. Focusing on honor in the Renaissance and capital in modern capitalism, the analysis shows…

Heat Before Breaking
Despite a growing recognition of the valuable information that detailed analyses of burned bone can provide in archaeological contexts, relatively few studies have investigated the relationship between the spatial distribution of burning marks and cooking behaviors. This study addresses this gap by applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to record thermal alterations on bone surfaces and to conduct a kernel density analysis of a 5500‐year‐o…

Subjective experience and perception of urban-inland blue spaces in urban parks and individual well-being
Introduction: The benefits of urban blue spaces in promoting health and well-being have been confirmed by a growing body of research. However, existing relevant studies mostly focus on objective proximity or accessibility and underestimate subjective experience and perception. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between subjective experience and perception of blue spaces and human health in inland urban public par…
Effects of Diaspore Traits and Vegetation Structures on Wind Dispersal of Solanum rostratum Using Wind Tunnel Simulations
The effects of diaspore traits and vegetation structure (VS) on the wind‐dispersal processes of an invasive alien tumbleweed Solanum rostratum are not well understood. In this study, we used a wind tunnel to determine the wind velocity required for stem breakage of the plant. VSs of bare ground, desert steppe, typical steppe, and meadow steppe were simulated to determine the threshold wind velocity (TWV) of the plant (diaspore) and to measure dia…

Research on the pottery decorations and manufacturing techniques of the Houtaomuga Phase I culture
The Houtaomuga Phase I culture represents the earliest Neolithic remains found in Northeast China heretofore, thus filling an over 10,000-year gap in early pottery distribution. Pottery decorations and manufacturing techniques from this culture are unique. The pattern application methods seen are stamping, rolling, and incising. The emergence of flat-bottomed pottery and coiling techniques serves as a prelude to the later ceramic tradition of cyl…
Efficacy of Low-Cost Sensor Networks at Detecting Fine-Scale Variations in Particulate Matter in Urban Environments
The negative health impacts of air pollution are well documented. Not as well-documented, however, is how particulate matter varies at the hyper-local scale, and the role that proximal sources play in influencing neighborhood-scale patterns. We examined PM 2.5 variations in one airshed within Indianapolis (Indianapolis, IN, USA) by utilizing data from 25 active PurpleAir (PA) sensors involving citizen scientists who hosted all but one unit (the c…

On the seasonality of long-range transport of acidic pollutants in East Asia
East Asia currently has the largest SO 2 and NO x emissions in the world. The long-range transport (LRT) of acidic pollutants in this region is of great concern but the extent is not well understood. Here results from combined long-term (⩾20 years) atmospheric deposition monitoring and air trajectory analysis in East Asia were reported. The results showed that despite the large decrease of SO 2 and NO x emissions in Taiwan, annual deposition of n…

The Houtaomuga site is a good case study that can fill this void, documenting a long-term cultural sequence from the Early Holocene to historical periods. With a discovery of the earliest known pottery in the Dongbei region, Houtaomuga can offer insight into the Early Holocene adaptation. In o…
Intentional cranial modification from the Houtaomuga Site in Jilin, China
OBJECTIVES: Intentional cranial modification (ICM) was a long-established tradition used to reshape the head. Unfortunately, motivation of the act is unclear. It has been found in recent and contemporary human populations throughout the Old and New Worlds, yet the drawback of the quest into the origin, diffusion, and meanings of ICM is the lack of early materials for scientific examination. This study reports the discovery of ICM from the Neolith…

Response of ecosystem intrinsic water use efficiency and gross primary productivity to rising vapor pressure deficit
Elevated vapor pressure deficit (VPD) due to drought and warming is well-known to limit canopy stomatal and surface conductance, but the impacts of elevated VPD on ecosystem gross primary productivity (GPP) are less clear. The intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE), defined as the ratio of carbon (C) assimilation to stomatal conductance, links vegetation C gain and water loss and is a key determinant of how GPP will respond to climate change. Whil…
