  • Animal exploitation by the last hunter-gatherers in the Mediterranean Iberia. New data from the Mesolithic groups from Cocina cave (Valencia, Eastern Iberia)

Open Access•C Real, Alfred Sanchis et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2024

Mesolithic groups in Mediterranean Iberia lived during a period of bioclimatic and cultural changes. Thus, their economic behaviour and the availability of plant and animal resources show some interesting variation compared to previous periods that indicate changes in mobility patterns and social connectivity networks. This paper presents information on patterns of animal exploitation of the last hunter-gatherers in this region through zooarchaeo…

  • Cooperation and Cattle Herding in Eighteenth Century Acadia

    Open Access•M H Welker, Joanne E Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2022

Anthropological studies of cattle management have frequently used nomadic open-range African pastoralists as models even when examining more sedentary agro-pastoralists relying upon combinations of crops and livestock that prevent or inhibit mobility. The relatively limited number of datasets on more sedentary agro-pastoralists makes it difficult to assess the suitability of this analogy when modeling and understanding herd dynamics in sedentary …

  • I wanna be your dog

    Open Access•M H Welker, D A Byers et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•Citada por: 3•Referências: 44

The domestic dog ( Canis familiaris ) holds a unique place in human cultures as the first species to be domesticated and has been adapted to a greater diversity of functions requiring far greater morphological variation than any other domesticate. Because of this variability in morphology and pronounced skeletal similarities with other canid species, dog remains are frequently challenging to identify in the archaeological record. Analysts have at…

  • The genomic history of the Iberian Peninsula over the past 8000 years

Open Access•Iñigo Olalde, Swapan Mallick et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2019

Genomics of the Iberian Peninsula Ancient DNA studies have begun to help us understand the genetic history and movements of people across the globe. Focusing on the Iberian Peninsula, Olalde et al. report genome-wide data from 271 ancient individuals from Iberia (see the Perspective by Vander Linden). The findings provide a comprehensive genetic time transect of the region. Linguistics analysis and genetic analysis of archaeological human remains…

  • A Bayesian Approach for Timing the Neolithization in Mediterranean Iberia

Open Access•Oreto García Puchol, Joan Bernabeu Aubán et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2018•Citada por: 3•Referências: 47

In this paper, we compile recent 14 C dates related to the Neolithic transition in Mediterranean Iberia and present a Bayesian chronological approach for testing the dual model , a mixed model proposed to explain the spread of farming and husbandry processes in eastern Iberia. The dual model postulates the coexistence of agricultural pioneers and indigenous Mesolithic foraging groups in the Middle Holocene. We test this general model with more re…

  • Identifying Neolithic animal management practices in the Adriatic using stable isotopes

    Open Access•E Zavodny, B Mcclure et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2015

We synthesise reported stable isotope values for domesticates and wild herbivores from sites spanning the Neolithic in coastal Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy (6000–3500 calBC). Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values are analyzed as proxies of diet and environment, with differences between species possibly indicating anthropogenic influence. Results are used to characterise diets and address questions of the origin and development of husbandry st…

  • The Pastoral Effect

    B Mcclure, Sarah B Mcclure•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2015•Citada por: 24•Referências: 42

Niche construction theory provides a framework to analyze the environmental effects of changing pastoral practices. In Europe, domesticated herd animals facilitated the expansion of farming by extending the spatial framework of early farming communities, produced milk for caloric security of pioneering farmers, and were partners in coevolutionary relationships that resulted in changes in the human genome and the spread of diseases. Domestic herd …

    Open Access•Sarah B Mcclure, Emil Podrug et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2014•Citada por: 6•Referências: 22

The eastern Adriatic is a key area for understanding the mechanisms and effects of the spread of agriculture. This article presents an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon chronology for the introduction and subsequent development of farming villages on the eastern shore of the Adriatic (∼6000–1700 cal BC) and evaluates this in comparison with the established pottery chronology based on stylistic data from Pokrovnik (Drniš) on the Dalm…

  • Learning Technology

    Sarah B Mcclure•BOOK•Learning Technology•2011

The dynamic relationship between technology, technological practice, and society is the focus of this book, based on the analysis of Neolithic pottery production in Valencia, eastern Spain. Two main questions frame this study: 1) what are the changes in technological practices in the manufacture of pottery during the Neolithic, and 2) how do these changes articulate with shifts in other realms of society? In order to address these questions the a…

  • Ams Dating of Human Bone from Cova De La Pastora

    Open Access•Sarah B Mcclure, Oreto García Puchol et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•Citada por: 9•Referências: 13

We present the results of 10 AMS radiocarbon dates for Cova de la Pastora (Alcoi, Alicante), a burial cave attributed to the Late Neolithic/Chalcolithic in eastern Spain. The direct dating of 10 human mandibles from Cova de la Pastora indicates that the cave was used as a burial place from the Late Neolithic/Chalcolithic to the Bronze Age. These dates reveal a continuity of ritual use not previously identified at the site. This case also serves t…

  • Holocene Vegetation Dynamics in Mediterranean Iberia

Graciela Gil-Romera, José S Carrión et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2009

In this paper we illustrate how different internal and external forcings conditioned postglacial vegetation in southern Mediterranean areas. By comparing seven Holocene sequences, we emphasize the role of glacial refugia as postglacial vegetation dispersal centers. We also identify the importance of the system's inertia in the time lags observed for vegetation response to climate change and human pressure. Finally, we explore the cascade of effec…

  • Human Behavioral Ecology and Climate Change during the Transition to Agriculture in Valencia, Eastern Spain

    B Mcclure, Sarah B Mcclure et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2009•Citada por: 7

Using the behavioral ecological model of ideal free distribution (IFD), McClure, Jochim, and Barton (2006) identified the tight linkage between agricultural subsistence strategies, herd management, and long-term dynamics of human land use. Missing from their discussion, however, was placing these changes into a broader environmental context. The IFD provides a useful heuristic device to illustrate cost-benefit decisions within a spatial context. …

  • Local Actions in Global Context

    B Mcclure, Sarah B Mcclure et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2009•Citada por: 1

The transition from Pleistocene to Holocene remodeled the world in ways strikingly similar to those noted by the frameworks convention for the Kyoto Protocol on global climate change. Hunter-gatherer and early agricultural economies balanced local variables with global environmental change. Iberia is a natural laboratory for understanding these processes. From demographic shifts in the Cantabrian refugium to relative constancy in the Mediterranea…

  • Gender, Technology, and Evolution

    Open Access•B Mcclure, Sarah B Mcclure•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2007•Citada por: 7•Referências: 60

In this paper I explore the potential of cultural inheritance theory to address the specific social contexts of craft production in prehistoric societies. Proponents of agency theory have criticized the 'techno-science' approach of scholars working with other theoretical paradigms and their unwillingness or inability to focus on human behavior instead of material remains. By emphasizing the social and contextual nature of technological practices,…
