C Preparation Protocols for Archaeological Samples at the Lmc14, Saclay, France
The Laboratoire de Mesure du Carbone 14 (LMC14) has operated a radiocarbon dating laboratory for almost twenty years with ARTEMIS, the Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) based on a NEC 9SDH-2 Pelletron tandem accelerator. A first status report describing the chemical pretreatment methods was published in 2017 (Dumoulin et al. 2017). This article summarizes updates of the routine procedures and presents new protocols. The quality checks in place …
Development of a 14 C Protocol at the Lmc14 for the Dating of Cultural Heritage Materials
The absolute dating of mortar by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) has been the subject of renewed interest for several years. International intercomparison campaigns, called MODIS (MOrtar Dating Intercomparison Study), have been carried out. The first MODIS-1 campaign highlighted limitations in mortar dating, due to the similarity between the primary material to be dated (binder) and the contaminant (exogenous CaCO 3 ). Methods have since emer…
Years of Ams 14 C Dating Using the Artemis Facility at the Lmc14 National Laboratory
In 2001, five French public organizations (CNRS, CEA, IRD, IRSN, and the Ministère de la Culture) signed an agreement to purchase a new accelerator mass spectrometer to provide radiocarbon dating services at the national level. The Laboratoire de Mesure du Carbone 14 (LMC14) was set up in Saclay (France) around ARTEMIS, an AMS system based on a 3MV Pelletron from NEC and installed in early 2003. In 2015, the LMC14 joined the Laboratoire des Scien…
Prevalence and Correlates of Likely Major Depressive Disorder among Medical Students in Alberta, Canada
This study suggests a high prevalence of likely MDD among medical students who do not feel they have sufficient social support from friends and family. Social adjustments, including talking to friends and family and participating in leisure activities, could reduce the level of depression among medical students
Identification in Pore Waters of Recycled Sediment Organic Matter Using the Dual Isotopic Composition of Carbon ( Δ 13 C and Δ 14 C)
Estuaries and deltas are crucial zones to better understand the interactions between continents and oceans, and to characterize the mineralization and burial of different sources of organic matter (OM) and their effect on the carbon cycle. In the present study, we focus on the continental shelf of the northwest Mediterranean Sea near the Rhône river delta. Sediment cores were collected and pore waters were sampled at different depths at one stati…
Marine Reservoir Effect of Spermaceti, a Wax Obtained From the Head of the Sperm Whale
Spermaceti is a waxy substance found in the head cavities of sperm whales ( Physeter macrocephalus and P. catodon ). This substance had a variety of commercial applications from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century, such as candles, soap, cosmetics and other compounds. Spermaceti was also occasionally used as wax for modeling sculptures. In order to date such artworks the marine reservoir effect (MRE) has to be considered. The…
Calcium Oxalate Radiocarbon Dating
The direct dating of rock paintings is not always possible due to the lack of organic carbon compounds in pigments, or because sampling from a heritage site is often restricted. To overcome these limitations, dating laboratories have to develop new approaches. In this study, we consider sampling calcium oxalate crusts covering the painted artworks as a way to indirectly date the rock art. This stratigraphic approach includes isolating and extract…

Thermal Decomposition of Lead White for Radiocarbon Dating of Paintings
Lead carbonates were used as cosmetic and pigment since Antiquity. The pigment, known as lead white, was generally composed of cerussite and hydrocerussite. Unlike most ancient pigments, lead white was obtained by a synthetic route involving metallic lead, vinegar and organic matter. Fermentation of organic matter produces heat and CO 2 emission, leading to the formation of carbonates. As lead white is formed by trapping CO 2 , radiocarbon ( 14 C…
Isotopic Signature (δ 13 C, ∆ 14 C) of DIC in Sediment Pore Waters
A better understanding of the dynamics of different particulate organic matter (OM) pools in the coastal carbon budget is a key issue for quantifying the role of the coastal ocean in the global carbon cycle. To elucidate the benthic component of this carbon cycle at the land-sea interface, we investigated the carbon isotope signatures (δ 13 C and ∆ 14 C) in the sediment pore waters dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in addition to the sediment OM t…

Radiocarbon Dating of Calcined Bones
Radiocarbon dating of the carbonate remaining in calcined bones is widely regarded as a viable alternative to date skeletal remains in situations where collagen is no longer present. However, anomalously low δ 13 C values measured in calcined bones prompted questions about the origin of the carbon used for dating. The goal of this study was to quantify the magnitude of carbon isotope exchange between bone carbonate and environmental CO 2 for bone…

What Is It?” Categorization Flexibility and Consumers' Responses to Really New Products
To understand really new products, consumers face the challenge of constructing new knowledge structures rather simply changing existing ones. Recent research in categorization suggests that one strategy for creating representations for these new products is to use information already contained in familiar product categories. While knowledge from multiple existing categories may be relevant, little research has examined how (and if) consumers pro…

Dating the Lascaux Cave Gour Formation
Lascaux Cave is renowned for its outstanding prehistoric paintings, strikingly well-preserved over about 18,000 yr. While stalagmites and stalactites are almost absent in the cave, there is an extensive calcite flowstone that covered a large part of the cave until its opening for tourists during the 1950s. The deposit comprises a succession of calcite rims, or “gours,” which allowed seepage water to pond in large areas in the cave. Their possible…

The analysis of students’ housing practices, movements and expectations has enabled the construction of a dual typology in student/inhabitant forms of dwelling, seen from the point of view of social relationships and construction of the self, and from that of emotions and control of desires. These typical ideals are tools for reflection enabling us to grasp some of the logics that structure students’ relation to lodging and housing. They also sug…
