  • Holocene and recent valley-bottom sediment storage decouples natural and anthropogenic hillslope erosion from sediment delivery to streams at time scales of 10 1 –10 4 yr in a third-order Yangtze Rive…

    Open Access•Brian D Collins, Amanda H Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2025

To assess the time scales and relative importance of temporal decoupling between hillslope erosion and the introduction of sediment to streams in a Yangtze River headwater basin, we used multiple techniques to date sediments in alluvial fans and terraces in a third-order stream valley draining a 30-km 2 catchment in SW Sichuan, China. Poorly sorted angular sediments in tributary-junction alluvial fans ranged in age from 11261 BCE to 1844 CE, and …

  • Implications of the loess record for Holocene climate and human settlement in Heye Catchment, Jiuzhaigou, eastern Tibetan Plateau, Sichuan, China

    Open Access•Amanda H Schmidt, Brian D Collins et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2023

We examine the Holocene loess record in the Heye Catchment on the margins of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and China Loess Plateau (CLP) to determine: the region to which the Heye Catchment climate is more similar; temporal change in wind strength; and modification of the loess record by mass wasting and human activity. Luminescence and radiocarbon dating demonstrate loess deposited in two periods: >11–8.6 ka and

  • Rapid Sequestration of Ecosystem Carbon in 30-year Reforestation with Mixed Species in Dry Hot Valley of the Jinsha River

Open Access•Zhilian Gong, Ya Tang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Reforestation plays an important role in the carbon cycle and climate change. However, knowledge of ecosystem carbon sequestration through reforestation with mixed species is limited. Especially in dry hot valley of the Jinsha River, no studies cover total ecosystem carbon sequestration level in mature mixed plantations for a limited area of mixed plantations and difficulty in the sampling of plant roots and deep soil. In this study, carbon seque…

  • Environmental literacy and nature experience in Chengdu, China

    Susan Clayton, Sarah M Bexell et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 2

This research investigated environmental literacy and nature experience among 1433 children and adults in Chengdu, China. Utilizing a standard measure of environmental literacy modified to be culture- and age-appropriate, we found almost universal agreement that nature should be protected. Although our results showed that older groups were less likely to enjoy experiences in nature compared to the younger ones, this was not reflected in a reduced…

  • The geographical patterns of Chinese liquors during 1995–2004

Open Access•Xilin Zhao, Ya Tang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2017

Chinese liquors come from a variety of different regions in China. This diversity can be attributed to the difference in microorganisms, but also to the biophysical environment. The latter constitutes a significant basis for the fermentation of products, but has not been adequately understood. Using spatial statistics analysis, we studied the causes of regional differences of Chinese liquors in the perspective of climatic and socio-economic envir…

  • Unintended Side Effects of Conservation

Open Access•Amanda H Schmidt, Yongxian Li et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2017

Toward the goals of returning the landscape of Jiuzhaigou National Nature Reserve to a perceived “natural” state and protecting the environment, the Reserve in 1998–2002 implemented forest preservation policies that included restrictions on forestry, agriculture, and animal herding practiced by resident Tibetans. To document the effects of these land use changes on landscape diversity and on human vulnerability to natural hazards, we mapped and c…

  • Cultural differentiation in product choice by outdoor tourists

Jie Du, Roger Buckley et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Recreation Research•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 52

We compare geographic origins, demographics, motivations, information sources and satisfaction factors for tourists taking high-volume bus-based sightseeing tours and low-volume active hiking tours, respectively, at Jiuzhaigou Nature Reserve, Sichuan, China. Interests, behaviour and product purchases differ between domestic Chinese and international inbound tourists. The two groups also differ in motivations, information sources and factors affec…

  • The Human Pollinators of Fruit Crops in Maoxian County, Sichuan, China

Open Access•Uma Partap, Ya Tang et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2012

The third dimension of mountain agricultural productivity, pollination, helps to maintain crop productivity and thus makes a great contribution to agricultural economy. In the absence of natural pollinators for a variety of reasons, farmers in Maoxian County of southwestern China employ “human pollinators” to pollinate apple and other fruit crops to secure yields. In 2001, we conducted a study to gain an understanding of the process and significa…

  • Anthropogenic hillslope terraces and swidden agriculture in Jiuzhaigou National Park, northern Sichuan, China

    Open Access•Amanda C Henck, Amanda Henck et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

Small, irregular terraces on hillslopes, or terracettes , are common landscape features throughout west central China. Despite their prevalence, there is limited understanding of the nature of these topographic features, the processes that form them, and the role humans played in their formation. We used an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the geology, ecology, and cultural history of terracette development within Jiuzhaigou National Par…
