Fraglich bleibt jedo…
Glacial geology of Thomas Island, Bunger Hills, East Antarctica
Thomas Island (Bunger Hills, East Antarctica) is a 34 square kilometre, deglaciated area potentially impacted by the East Antarctic ice sheet and Remenchus Glacier from the east, Shackleton Ice Shelf from the north and Edisto Glacier from the west. Its glacial geology reveals a complex interplay between these ice masses, which operate with different spatial and temporal dynamics. This poster maps glacial erosional and depositional features and al…
Holocene environmental history of Thomas Island, Bunger Oasis, East Antarctica, inferred from a lake sediment record
Over the last decades, climate change led to only moderate changes of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS). In recent years, however, modelling approaches and field experiments have shown that also the EAIS is increasingly affected by ice mass losses. In order to obtain information on temporal/spatial ice sheet changes at the margins of the major glaciers in East Antarctica, northern Bunger Hills were visited within the frame of the EASI3 "RV Pola…

Scanxiety” and a sense of control
Anxiety surrounding follow-up scans, also known as "scanxiety", is a common problem. In this study, we expanded on previous findings and found a positive aspect of scans, namely regaining a sense of security and control, which can strengthen the psychological well-being of the survivors and their families. To optimize follow-up care and improve the quality of life of lung cancer survivors and caregivers, strategies to integrate psychosocial care,…

High-resolution palaeohydrological reconstruction of central Italy during the Holocene
The endorheic nature of Lake Trasimeno in combination with its position in central Italy makes it a relevant site to better constrain spatial differences in Holocene climatic variability in the Mediterranean area. Herein, we present a high-resolution ostracod record from the Holocene section of an 8.59-m-long sedimentary core, which is compared with historical data to distinguish anthropogenic and climatic signals. The occurrence, abundance and v…
Organic geochemical and palynological evidence for Holocene natural and anthropogenic environmental change at Lake Dojran (Macedonia/Greece)
In this study, we present lipid biomarker and palynological data for a sediment core from Lake Dojran (Macedonia/Greece), which covers the entire Holocene period. We analyzed vascular plant-derived n-alkanes, combustion-derived polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), fecal steroids, and bacterial and archaeal glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT) lipids in concert with microcharcoal and pollen assemblages to reconstruct climatic, environme…

Holocene range of Mytilus edulis in central East Greenland
Radiocarbon age determinations on shells of the common mussel ( Mytilus edulis ) show that this species was present in central East Greenland from approximately 9500 to 5400 cal. years BP. It probably arrived first at the outer coast, at a time when the inner parts of the fjords were still occupied by glaciers. After perhaps a millennium it spread to the central fjord region where it lived for at least three millennia. The former occurrence of My…
Deglaciation chronology, sea-level changes and environmental changes from Holocene lake sediments of Germania Havn Sø, Sabine Ø, northeast Greenland
Germania Havn Sø is located at the outermost coast of northeastern Greenland. According to radiocarbon dating, the lake basin was deglaciated in the early Holocene, around 11,000 cal yr BP. At that time the lake was a marine bay, but the lake was isolated soon after deglaciation at ~ 10,600 cal yr BP. The marine fauna was species-poor, indicating harsh conditions with a high sedimentation rate and lowered salinity due to glacial meltwater supply.…

No significant ice-sheet expansion beyond present ice margins during the past 4500 yr at Rauer Group, East Antarctica
The history of glacial advances and retreats of the East Antarctic ice sheet during the Holocene is not well-known, due to limited field evidence in both the marine and terrestrial realm. A 257-cm-long sediment core was recovered from a marine inlet in the Rauer Group, East Antarctica, 1.8 km in front of the present ice-sheet margin. Radiocarbon dating and lithological characteristics reveal that the core comprises a complete marine record since …
Geomorphology and glacial history of Rauer Group, East Antarctica
The presence of glacial sediments across the Rauer Group indicates that the East Antarctic ice sheet formerly covered the entire archipelago and has since retreated at least 15 km from its maximum extent. The degree of weathering of these glacial sediments suggests that ice retreat from this maximum position occurred sometime during the latter half of the last glacial cycle. Following this phase of retreat, the ice sheet margin has not expanded m…
Repeated short-term bioproductivity changes in a coastal lake on Store Koldewey, northeast Greenland
A lacustrine sediment core from Store Koldewey, northeast Greenland, was biogeochemically, biologically and sedimentologically investigated in order to reconstruct long- and short-term climatic and environmental variability. The chronology of the uppermost 189 cm of the record is based on ten 14 C AMS age determinations of aquatic mosses. The record covers almost the entire Holocene and revealed changes on multidecadal to centennial scales. Datin…
The catastrophic final flooding of Doggerland by the Storegga Slide tsunami
Around 8200 calBP, large parts of the now submerged North Sea continental shelf ('Doggerland') were catastrophically flooded by the Storegga Slide tsunami, one of the largest tsunamis known for the Holocene, which was generated on the Norwegian coastal margin by a submarine landslide. In the present paper, we derive a precise calendric date for the Storegga Slide tsunami, use this date for reconstruction of contemporary coastlines in the North Se…
