Emerging strontium isoscapes of Anatolia (Türkiye)
Introduction The use of strontium isotope ratio ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) analysis in ancient mobility studies in the archaeology of Anatolia (modern Türkiye) has steadily grown since the early 2010s. However, a coherent map of the isotopic variability of bioavailable Sr (isoscape) does not exist for the region and the paucity of baseline data that is necessary for the interpretation of archaeological data significantly constrains the heuristic power of th…
Inequality at the Dawn of the Bronze Age
On the upper reaches of the Tigris and Euphrates, archaeologists encounter evidence that challenges conventional understandings of early state formation as a transition from ‘small-scale, egalitarian’ to ‘large-scale, stratified’ societies. One such location is the Early Bronze Age cemetery of Başur Höyük, which presents evidence of grand funerary rituals—including ‘retainer burials’ and spectacular deposits of metallic wealth—in an otherwise sma…
New Ams Chronology for the Early Bronze Iii/Iv Transition at Khirbat Iskandar, Jordan
We present the first Bayesian 14 C modeling based on AMS ages from stratified sediments representing continuous occupation across the Early Bronze III/IV interface in the Southern Levant. This new high-precision modeling incorporates 12 calibrated AMS ages from Khirbat Iskandar Area C using OxCal 4.4.4 and the IntCal 20 calibration curve to specify the EB III/IV transition at or slightly before 2500 cal BCE. Our results contribute to the continui…
Combined osteomorphological, isotopic, aDNA, and ZooMS analyses of sheep and goat remains from Neolithic Ulucak, Turkey
Multispecies Archaeology
Seasonal mobility and multispecies interactions in the Mesolithic northeastern Adriatic
The traditional archaeological narrative surrounding the early Holocene in the Balkans tends to focus on changes in human cultural material, technology, and subsistence from the Mesolithic into the Neolithic. Demographic continuity—or lack thereof—has been a central debate, but recent models in the eastern Adriatic have increasingly recognized the spatially and temporally nuanced nature of this shift (e.g., Bass 2008; Forenbaher et al. 2013; Fore…
