  • Restorative Experiences of Regenerative Environments

    Open Access•Robert France, Heather Braiden•ARTICLE•Environment and Society•2024

Environmental health influences personal wellbeing through direct experience. Despite this, the focus of the literature on the regeneration and reuse of post- industrial sites considers them as biophysical spaces studied conceptually rather than as places of physical engagement. The literature lacks an embodied perspective and presents such landscapes as sensorially impoverished. Narrative scholarship counters this shortcoming by employing phenom…

  • From Desk to Field

    Open Access•Robert France•ARTICLE•Urban Planning•2022

The primary focus of the urban agriculture literature has been on landscapes as biophysical spaces in which to grow food rather than on them as humanized places in which to grow experience. There is a need to leave the desk behind and enter the field to invigorate case study descriptions through the reflexive tool of narrative scholarship

  • From folkloric belief to fishery bycatch

    Open Access•Robert France•ARTICLE•Anthropozoologica•2022•References: 69

France, Robert (2022): From folkloric belief to fishery bycatch: contrasting cryptozoological and euhemeristic interpretations of Australian sea serpents. Anthropozoologica 57 (3): 101-115, DOI: 10.5252/anthropozoologica2022v57a3

  • Minatory Monsters for Turbulent Times

    Open Access•Robert France•ARTICLE•Shima•2022

Monsters, by the Latin definition of their name, are omens that portend turbulent times. The pamphlet A Relation of a terrible Monster called a Toad-fish, published in London in 1642, told of 'a fiend, not a fish; at the least a monster, not an ordinary creature' which had become entangled in a fishing net and then put on display in London. The creature was described as resembling a giant toad, with a wide, toothy mouth and human characteristics …

  • The Monstrous Anthropocene

    Open Access•Robert France•ARTICLE•Anthropocenes – Human Inhuman…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 66

For conservation biologists, determining the onset of deleterious change through recognising baseline conditions is regarded as being critical for implementing the effective management and restoration of anthropogenically-altered marine ecosystems. In particular, mining information contained within historical anecdotes from non-traditional sources can provide valuable insights about past environmental conditions. The present study demonstrates th…

  • Ethnobiology and Shifting Baselines

    Open Access•Robert France•ARTICLE•Ethnobiology and Conservation•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 62

Recognizing shifts in baseline conditions is necessary for understanding long-term changes in populations as a prelude to implementing present-day management actions and setting future restoration goals for anthropogenically-altered marine ecosystems. Examining historical information contained within anecdotal accounts from non-traditional sources has previously proven useful in this regard. Herein, I scrutinize eyewitness descriptions and illust…

  • Imaginary sea monsters and real environmental threats

    Open Access•Robert France•ARTICLE•International Review of…•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 2

At one time, largely but not exclusively during the nineteenth century, retellings of encounters with sea monsters were a mainstay of dockside conversations among mariners, press reportage for an audience of fascinated landlubbers, and journal articles published by believing or sceptical natural scientists. Today, to the increasing frustration of cryptozoologists, mainstream biologists and environmental historians have convincingly argued that th…

  • Reinterpreting nineteenth-century accounts of whales battling ‘sea serpents’ as an illation of early entanglement in pre-plastic fishing gear or maritime debris

    Open Access•Robert France, R L France•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2016•Cited by: 5

Entanglement of whales in active fishing gear and abandoned maritime debris is recognized to be a serious problem in contemporary marine conservation biology, one that is commonly believed to have its origin with the introduction of non-degrading plastic in the mid-twentieth century. As many sightings of purported sea serpents are now acknowledged to have been due to misidentified cetaceans, this anecdotal literature can provide a valuable resour…

  • Newly Reported Colonies of Ivory Gulls on Southeastern Ellesmere Island

    Open Access•Robert France, R L France et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1992

Seven colonies of Ivory gulls comprising 330 adults were discovered on nunataks emerging from the Manson Icefield of southeastern Ellesmere Island. This brings to total 33 the number of active colonies that have been located in North America over the 14 years since the first was discovered.Key words: Ivory gull colonies, Manson Icefield, Ellesmere Island
