This article examines the adaptive strategies deployed by Andean agrarian families of the province of Yauyos (Peru) to face the multidimensional crisis of the COVID‐19 pandemic, and their articulation with long‐term rural change processes. The main findings indicate that COVID‐19 acted as a catalyst, making visible and exacerbating the pre‐existing structural conditions of inequality and marginalization. The response strategies were based on loca…

  • Care as social action

Open Access•Jessaca Leinaweaver, Jeanine Anderson•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2026

Children are deeply enmeshed in webs of care which have strong and weak points and gaps, and within them, children are active providers, not just recipients (or refusers). Drawing on a comparative group fieldwork project across six rural Peruvian towns in 2008, we found that children are centrally involved as caregivers in an ecosystem of care that draws together plants and animals and humans, water, earth, and mountains. The mode of care often p…

  • Agentes de su propio juego

    Open Access•Jeanine Anderson•ARTICLE•Anthropologica•2024

  • What is care and what is not caring? The challenges of cultural diversity

    Open Access•Jeanine Anderson•ARTICLE•Cuadernos de Relaciones Laborales•2020•References: 10

This article uses evidence from Peru to examine issues of care and its absence, both in the sense of "giving care" and concern with someone or something. The two cases analyzed bring into consideration separate couples trying to agree on the care obligations of non-custodial male fathers and the distance between the care practices of indigenous Amazonians and urban Peruvian society. The discussion highlights emotions, motivations, systems of mora…

  • Urban Poverty Reborn

    Open Access•Jeanine Anderson•ARTICLE•Journal of Developing Societies•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 4

This article draws on a longitudinal study of a poor neighborhood in Lima, Peru, to question received wisdom concerning the intergenerational transmission of poverty. The research follows a sample of 56 families over nearly 30 years. It focuses on the efforts of parents to launch their children on what they hope will be different and superior life courses (compared to their own), despite their limited resources. Members of the second generation a…

  • Narrativas de aflicción de mujeres andinas

    Open Access•Jeanine Anderson•ARTICLE•Allpanchis•2000

  • Cross-cultural Perspectives on Middle-aged Women [and Comments and Replies]

Judith K Brown, Jeanine Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1982•Cited by: 24

Several exploratory cross-cultural studies have suggested that positive changes take place in the lives of women in non-Western societies as they age beyond the childbearing years. They are freed from a variety of restrictions. They are given authority over certain specified kinsmen, and they are provided with opportunities for achievement and recognition beyond the household. The fact that such changes are more dramatic in some societies than in…
