  • Thinking Through Sociality: An Anthropological Interrogation of Key Concepts

Sally Anderson, Virginia Caputo et al.•BOOK•Thinking through sociality•2022

As issues and circumstances investigated by anthropologists are becoming ever more diverse, the need to address social affiliation in contemporary situations of mobility, urbanity, transnational connections, individuation, media, and capital flows, has never been greater. Thinking Through Sociality combines a review of classical theories with recent theoretical innovations across a wide range of issues, locales, situations and domains. In this bo…

  • Fashioning a Mind of One's Own in the Good Company of Others

    Steven G Anderson, Sally Anderson•ARTICLE•Anthropological Forum•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 28

While much theoretical work on value takes point of departure in what adults presumably value, this chapter addresses the valuing work children do. Articulating ideals of ‘being social’ and ‘being oneself’ as good forms of personhood, Danish teachers oblige children to enact a good form of ‘being together as a class’, a sociability considered vital to democratic society. Drawing on discussions of value exemplarity, I suggest that Danish school cl…

  • The Accountability Effects of Political Institutions and Capitalism on Interstate Conflict

    Open Access•Sally Anderson, Mark Souva•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2010•Cited by: 10•References: 28

Selectorate theory posits that leader accountability increases with the size of the winning coalition. Recent research contends that capitalism also increases leader accountability because leaders are more dependent on the public for revenue in more capitalist economies. The authors argue that extant tests of accountability arguments of interstate conflict initiation and targeting are flawed. Accountability theories of foreign policy expect leade…

  • Unacknowledged Legislators: Poets Protest the War (Introduction)

John J Simon, Sally Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2003

Earlier this year, Sam Hamill, poet and co-founder of the prestigious literary publisher, Copper Canyon Press, was invited to a White House literary symposium. Incensed by President Bush's war plans, Hamill wrote in an open letter to his colleagues "I believe the only legitimate response to such a morally bankrupt and unconscionable idea is to reconstitute a Poets Against the War movement like the one organized to speak out against the war in Vie…

  • København

    Sally Anderson•ARTICLE•Tidsskriftet Antropologi•2003

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and the Kingdom's only metropolis. The city embraces institutions of royalty, state and national culture as well as all the 'people' of Denmark. Whereas national institutions are by and large located within the walls of the fortress city, the 'people' are generally located in neighborhoods constructed during rapid industrialization. The article explores the idea of Copenhagen as a folkelig city, a city that ac…

  • Involuntary celibacy: A life course analysis

Denise A Donnelly, Denise Donnelly et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2001•Cited by: 41•References: 9

Using a life course perspective, we explored the development and maintenance of involuntary celibacy for 82 respondents recruited over the I'nternet. Data were collected using an open‐ended electronic questionnaire. Modified grounded theory analysis yielded three groups of involuntary celibates, persons desiring to have sex but unable to find partners. Virgins were those who had never had sex, singles had sex in the past but were unable to establ…

  • Practicing Children: Consuming and Being Consumed by Sports

    Open Access•Steven G Anderson, Sally Anderson•ARTICLE•Journal of Sport and Social Issues•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 1

In Denmark, children's sports are organized in voluntary associations. This article addresses two recreational sites: a volunteer gymnastics association and a capoeira school. Whereas gymnastics associations are embedded in Danish movement culture, the capoeira school is a new, exotic import. Debates construe volunteer associations as more democratic and thus more moral socialization sites than privately run schools. To explore relations between …
