  • Potentials of community-based-ecotourism to improve human wellbeing in Cambodia

    Abu S M G Kibria, Abu SMG Kibria et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Community-based Ecotourism (CBE) has been promoted and widely adopted as an approach for funding conservation initiatives, while at the same time contributing to the wellbeing of the host communities. However, it often fails to live up to its promise and thereby lets the local people return to their old ways of doing things. The study is to explore the potentials of CBE on the indigenous human wellbeing by conducting a case study in the Veun Sai-…

  • Mandibular corpus shape is a taxonomic indicator in extant hominids

    Open Access•Katharine L Balolia, Elise C Jakeman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 31

The high taxonomic classification rates at both the genus and species level, using 3D surface data and advanced quantification techniques, show that the shape of the alveolar arch, corpus at M 1 and symphysis can distinguish extant hominid taxa. These findings have implications for assessing the taxonomy of extinct hominid specimens which preserve these mandibular sub-regions

  • Speciation in Biology and the Fossil Record

    Open Access•Colin P Groves, Colin Groves•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2018

The nature of species has been much discussed since the closing decades of the twentieth century. There is now increasing acceptance that the essence of a species is that it is an evolutionary lineage, a concept made operational by the so‐called phylogenetic species concept. In this light, there may be over twenty distinct species represented in the human fossil record; if, as has been proposed, we define a genus as a monophyletic group of specie…

  • Progress in human systematics. A review

    Colin P Groves, Colin Groves•ARTICLE•PARADIGMI•2017

  • Description of a new species of Hoolock gibbon (Primates

Open Access•Pengfei Fan, Kai He et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2017

We describe a species of Hoolock gibbon (Primates: Hylobatidae) that is new to science from eastern Myanmar and southwestern China. The genus of hoolock gibbons comprises two previously described living species, the western (Hoolock hoolock) and eastern hoolock (H. leuconedys) gibbons, geographically isolated by the Chindwin River. We assessed the morphological and genetic characteristics of wild animals and museum specimens, and conducted multi-…

  • Bovids of the World

José R Castelló, Colin Groves et al.•BOOK•Bovids of the World•2016

Bovids are a diverse group of ruminant mammals that have hooves and unbranched hollow horns. Bovids of the World is the first comprehensive field guide to cover all 279 bovid species, including antelopes, gazelles, cattle, buffaloes, sheep, and goats. From the hartebeest of Africa and the takin of Asia to the muskox of North America, bovids are among the world's most spectacular animals and this stunningly illustrated and easy-to-use field guide …

  • The species in primatology

    Open Access•Colin P Groves, Colin Groves•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2014

Biologists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries all bandied about the term “species,” but very rarely actually said what they meant by it. Often, however, one can get inside their thinking by piecing together some of their remarks. One of the most nearly explicit‐appropriately, for the man who wrote a book called The Origin of Species – was Charles Darwin : “Practically, when a naturalist can unite two forms together by others ha…

  • Species Concept in Primates

    Open Access•Colin P Groves, Colin Groves•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2012

The way we view the Species category in Primates, as in other animals, especially other vertebrates, has been going through a revolution over the past 20 years or so. Much is wrong with the idea that we can define species according to whether or not they are “reproductively isolated”: this concept, the so‐called Biological Species Concept, has never offered any guidelines in the case of allopatric populations; this has now been shown to be simply…

    Open Access•Colin P Groves, Colin Groves•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•1996•Referências: 3

Attempts to construct Biblical‐based chronologies of the earth, life and humanity are reviewed. There are both pre‐evolutionary attempts, such as that by Archbishop Ussher, and modern ones, by the ‘creation science’ movement, led by Dr Gish. The models constructed by the Archbishop and his contemporaries were excusable; the present‐day ones are constructed not in ignorance of modern advances in geology, palaeontology and archaeology but despite t…

  • Relationships between the fossil colobine Mesopithecus pentelicus and extant cercopithecoids, based on dental metrics

Maxillary dental measurements from six specimens of Mesopithecus pentelicus , 64 cercopithecines, 59 African colobines, and 64 Asian colobines were analyzed by means of a “nested research design” that was specifically designed to explore the affiliation between fossils and extant cercopithecoids at different systematic levels. The results showed that the variation among taxonomic groups was mainly associated with size; however, in addition, inter…
