  • Rossel Islanders and Wanggulam Lani: Contrasting forms of social inequality

    Open Access•Anton Ploeg•ARTICLE•Paideuma•2023

This paper compares social inequality in the Melanesian societies of the Rossel Islanders and the Wanggulam Lani. As regards the Rossel Islanders, I rely on the ethnography of John Liep. For the Wanggulam Lani I use my own research among them. The comparison shows how, in these two societies, men ac-quired prestige and power in different ways: on Rossel Island by prominence in transactions in wealth items, and among the Wanggulam Lani by warriorh…

  • The ‘Third Expedition to South New Guinea’: A Review Essay

    Anton Ploeg•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific History•2022

The essay deals with colonial exploration in southwest New Guinea in the early 20th century. The expedition concerned was a large-scale, complex, and risky undertaking in an area that was hardly known at the time. The essay reviews the diary written by Gerard Versteeg, a staff member of the expedition. Versteeg was a physician, but in addition to his medical work he had to perform other tasks. His diary provides a day-to-day account of the course…

Open Access•Anton Ploeg•ARTICLE•Bijdragen tot de taal- land- en…•2020

Dutch New Guinea inherited a multiple entry system for its administrative staff, resembling the one that had existed in the Dutch East Indies. At the top were the public servants dealing with Interior Affairs (ambtenaren Binnenlands Bestuur), in short ambtenaren BB.They were Dutchmen with university degrees obtained in the Netherlands, first in "Indology", later, when that discipline was discontinued, in a range of other disciplines.Second were th…

This paper reviews the results of the research carried out that a group of German scholars and scientists has carried out with the Eipo, in the eastern highlands of West Papua, Indonesia. Their work started in the mid- 1970’s and has not been completely finalised so far. The research aimed at a comprehensive documentation of the way of life of the Eipo. This aim required the interdisciplinarity that characterised the project, although anthropolog…

Amendments proposed, in 1955, to the section of the New Guinea Act dealing with the recognition and alienation of land under indigenous tenure in Dutch New Guinea led to open debate. Orthodox views on the land rights of colonial subjects in the Dutch East Indies, and the criticisms levelled at the colonial administration by the distinguished legal expert, C. van Vollenhoven, provide a context for appreciating the debate over land law in Dutch New…

In two earlier papers I compared Grand Valley with Bokondini Dani, a Western Dani group (Ploeg 1966 and Ploeg in press). Fortunately, Feil's recent analysis of the evolution of Highland cultures (1987) now allows me to elaborate…

A source-critical or tradition-historical approach to the Genesis Apocryphon will quite justifiably emphasize the features of the Apocryphon that point toward what can be described as its lack of compositional unity. There exists, however, a level on which the Apocryphon can be shown to be a whole; that is its narrative unity. The latter is the result of the ways in which the final author/composer organized and manipulated the sources and traditi…
