Dealing with the dynamics of identification and conflict, this book uses theoretical orientations ranging from political ecology to rational choice theory, interpretive approaches, Marxism and multiscalar analysis. Case studies set in Africa, Europe and Central Asia are grouped in three sections devoted to pastoralism, identity and migration. What connects all of these anthropological explorations is a close focus on processes of identification a…

Davide Torri, Sophie Roche•EDITOR•BOOK•Female Shamanism in Asia•2020

This book concentrates on female shamanisms in Asia and their relationship with the state and other religions, offering a perspective on gender and shamanism that has often been neglected in previous accounts. • The shamaness at the threshold

Sophie Roche, Davide Torri•CHAPTER•Female Shamanism in Asia•2020

The conflicts between forms of shamanism and bureaucratically integrated religious practice seem to be almost a constant of historical encounters. Controlling beliefs and practices of a population over which empires and nation states expand was, and still is, considered a crucial part of state-building processes and a feature of modernization, where regimes of signs have to be checked and sanitized for the smooth functioning of the state machiner…

    Sophie Roche•BOOK•The Faceless Terrorist•2019

"How could a person portrayed as a terrorist by the Tajik state also be seen as a mujahid fighter in Islam and be a cousin all at the same time? It this just a matter of perspective and conceptualization? To believe in the protection of concepts to safeguard groups and individuals from the uncertain character of the world, is to deny the existence of chance and the contradictions in life. This book uses approaches from existential anthropology to…

Open Access•Sahar Faeghi, Sophie Roche•ARTICLE•Anthropology of the Middle East•2019•References: 5

Among the many consequences of Iran’s suffering from water shortage in recent decades, the major river of Isfahan city, Zayandeh Rud, has dried out. While experts observe this issue through environmental discourses and local farmers engage in political protests, citizens phrase the loss of the river as a cultural catastrophe. Within the environmental configuration that includes the river, historical buildings, parks, fauna, flora and humans, habi…

  • Status Translation

    Open Access•Sophie Roche•ARTICLE•Anthropological Journal of…•2018

For migrants coming from Central Asia to Moscow, the Cathedral Mosque functions as a central hub to organise their life in the Russian capital. The reason for this is not predominantly their faith or religion. Rather, this place of worship opens a space in which these mostly Tajik people translate their status from that of a stranger exposed to xenophobia and distrust to the respected position of a proper Muslim

  • The Fabric of Answer

    Sophie Roche•ARTICLE•Central Asian Affairs•2018•Cited by: 1

The fabric of answer ( fabrika javob ) refers to the efforts of Tajikistan’s State Committee for National Security to respond to discussions in the media as well as among people (rumors). Its primary goal is to shape the outside facade of the country and shut down, ridicule or negate critical and dissident speech. The main goal is to work on the image ( imijsoz ) of the country, which is done by exploiting the notions of vatan (homeland) and mill…

Since independence in 1991, Central Asian countries have put great effort into creating their respective national narratives, which are often based on an ethnic imagination. In Tajikistan this included the idea of shaping society via the family unit. Increasingly, motherhood became the focus of attention, which was made possible by merging two concepts. On the one hand, women are considered as “cultured” and educated people who the Soviet Union f…

    Sophie Roche•ARTICLE•Central Asian Affairs•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

In Tajikistan the concept of “womanhood” developed in the Soviet period remains at odds with local conceptions of gender roles. These competing forms of female agency force young women to creatively shape their future, drawing on the paradigm of womanhood that befits their life-world. Here, we see how young women take their future into their own hands, in a society that scrutinizes female behavior and seems to restrict women’s agency. Recognizing…

  • Domesticating Youth

    Sophie Roche•BOOK•Domesticating Youth The Youth…•2014

Most of the Muslim societies of the world have entered a demographic transition from high to low fertility, and this process is accompanied by an increase in youth vis-à-vis other age groups. Political scientists and historians have debated whether such a “youth bulge” increases the potential for conflict or whether it represents a chance to accumulate wealth and push forward social and technological developments. This book introduces the discuss…

    Sophie Roche•ARTICLE•Anthropology of the Contemporary…•2013

The circumstances in which Islam has been able to survive the atheistic policies of the Soviet Union have been much debated throughout the last two decades. The study of authorities and institutions has highlighted numerous well-known successful religious authorities and groups that maintained religious networks throughout that period. However, many religious individuals have found navigating this period more problematic. What about those student…

  • The Changing Sex Ratios at Birth During the Civil War in Tajikistan

Open Access•Sophie Hohmann, Hohmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2010

Sex ratios at birth are known to change during wars or shortly after. This study investigated changes in sex ratios during the civil war that occurred in Tajikistan after the dismantling of the Soviet Union. This civil war was particularly bloody and long lasting, and had many demographic consequences. According to vital registration data, some 27,000 persons died in excess of previous trends during the civil war period (1992-1997), and total mor…

  • From youth bulge to conflict

    Sophie Roche•ARTICLE•Central Asian Survey•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 19

Youth' is an ambivalent concept that is situationally and emically specific. This article discusses socio-demographic approaches to youth and applies the 'youth bulge' argument – which claims that a society with a high percentage of youth has an increased risk for violent conflicts – to the Central Asian context, more precisely to the early Komsomol and the former combatants in civil war Tajikistan. Based on ethnographic material, I analyse vangu…
