Documenting Scholarly Dishonesty in Hyman Berman's 1976 Jewish Social Studies Article, "Political Antisemitism in Minnesota during the Great Depression," and Some of Its Political Consequences
This article draws attention to the distortions and falsehoods that appear in the 1976 Jewish Social Studies article "Political Antisemitism in Minnesota during the Great Depression" by Hyman Berman. It identifies and corrects the many errors on two of its pages. In addition, the role of Berman's article in a student movement at the University of Minnesota to remove names on four campus buildings of administrators who engaged in racist and antise…

A Serious Man in Situ: “Fear and Loathing in St. Louis Park”
“Who ever heard of the Coen brothers anyway?” asked a Minneapolis woman with whom I was seated at a small party shortly after the opening of A Serious Man , in 2009. An accomplished and striking woman in her early seventies, Ms. S had lived in St. Louis Park, a first-ring suburb of Minneapolis, and the hometown of Joel and Ethan Coen. In fact, all of the women at the table where I was seated were likewise: affluent, politically and culturally act…
America, Mordecai Kaplan, and the Postwar Jewish Youth Revolt
America, Mordecai Kaplan, and the Postwar Jewish Youth Revolt Riv-Ellen Prell (bio) Mordecai M. Kaplan noted a particular anxiety in his diary on a December day in 1918 following his consultation with Jacob De Haas, executive secretary of the American Federation of Zionists. He was led to this "inquiry," he wrote, because "my longing for Palestine has been growing in intensity. I actually yearn to settle there with my family." The conversation we…

Keynote Remarks on Marriage
Why do we dance at weddings? What are we marking and celebrating? Scholars of the family and society have abandoned their efforts to discover for marriage a universal definition which was once thought of as helpful for answering these questions. The search for the lowest common denominator of marriage in all cultures that would reveal the universally shared features of the institution offers little insight into this ubiquitous and complex human r…
Messianism, Mysticism, and Magic: A Sociological Analysis of Jewish Religious Movements
In this first sociological analysis of millenarian and mystical movements from the Middle Ages to the present, Sharot deals primarily with the Jewish masses. He describes religious currents in which hope focused on either a messiah who would bring redemption or on the means by which the individual could achieve mystical cleaving to God. Also discussed are Sabbatianism, Hasidism, Reform Judiasm, revolutionary socialism, Zionism, and the relationsh…
