  • Risk, Ritual and Performance

    Open Access•Leo Howe•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2000•Cited by: 42•References: 13

Performance approaches to the interpretation of ritual highlight process, presence, strategy and uniqueness. They are often favourably contrasted to textual approaches said to emphasize meaning, structure and stability. However, this sharp distinction can be maintained only by ignoring the notion of inscription, which is central to text. Inscription is a political process which involves risk, strategy and struggle. Moreover, commonly performance …

  • Ideology, Domination and Unemployment

    Open Access•Leo Howe•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•1994•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Criticisms of the neo-Marxist dominant ideology thesis tend to underemphasize the role which ideology plays in legitimating and sustaining systems of inequality, and instead to privilege explanations based on the 'iron cage' of economic and political relationships. A serious problem with some neo-Marxist analyses is the rather crude conceptualization of ideology which makes them susceptible to attack. Using material collected in Belfast amongst P…

    Open Access•Leo Howe, Leo E A Howe•BOOK•Being Unemployed in Northern…•1990•Cited by: 17

Age-old ideas about the deserving and undeserving poor are still pervasive in our society. Stereotypes of the scrounger and the malingerer, and the widespread belief that much joblessness is voluntary, continue to constitute the ideological basis of conservative social policy on unemployment and poverty. In this study of unemployment in Belfast, Dr Howe successfully refutes some of the widely held myths about the black economy, the welfare benefi…

  • Mode of Subsistence and Folk Biological Taxonomy [and Comments and Reply]

    Cecil H Brown, E N Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1985•Cited by: 35•References: 17

There are significant differences between the folk biological taxonomy and nomenclature of hunter-gatherers and that of small-scale agriculturalists. While foragers possess sizable inventories of labeled plant and animal classes, small-scale farmers tend to have inventories that are considerably larger. Also, binomial names, such as English blue oak and shingle oak, are common in folk taxonomies of cultivators but rare in those of hunter-gatherer…

This article describes the processes of assessment and administration of certain aspects of the supplementary benefit scheme in a social security office in Northern Ireland. Based on evidence obtained observing staff-claimant interaction and interviews with over fifty unemployed claimants, the analysis attempts to demonstrate that a combination of resource constraints, staff attitudes and beliefs, and claimant tactics gives rise to practices whic…

  • The Thick and the Thin: On the Interpretive Theoretical Program of Clifford Geertz [and Comments and Reply]

Paul Shankman, Attila Ágh et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1984•Cited by: 61•References: 6

The promise of interpretive theory has led Clifford Geertz to call for a new and different anthropology as well as a broad "refiguration of social thought" in the social sciences and humanities. This essay examines Geertz's theoretical program, including its application to the specific cases of Balinese trance and the Balinese theatre state. Special attention is given to Geertz's claim that interpretive theory is superior to conventional social s…

The present paper has both ethnographic and theoretical aims. Ethno graphically it attempts to describe the structural order embedded in a sub-system of Balinese collective ideas, viz. those that systemati cally interrelate the similarities and differences between the various beings which exist in their universe, and in this way to gain a fuller understanding of the actions of, and the beliefs about, any one par ticular kind of being.
