  • Laser Ablation System With a Diode Laser for Ams 14 C Measurement of Organic Materials

Open Access•Fumina Minamitani, Takayuki Omori et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 18

We constructed a laser ablation (LA) system using a diode laser for the accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) measurement of organic materials. The system could extract adequate CO 2 to analyze small masses (0.1 mg C) at a resolution of 250 μm by a 5.5 W diode laser. The LA system was assessed using standard materials (IAEA-C1, IAEA-C2, IAEA-C3, IAEA-C6, and Ox II) and applied to natural tree ring samples. For the LA sampling of or…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Tree Rings From the Beginning and End of the Yayoi Period, Japan

Open Access•Minoru Sakamoto, Masataka Hakozaki et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 10

We have conducted radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating of Japanese tree rings from 1053 to 921 BCE and 41 BCE to 130 CE. Dating was also performed using oxygen isotope dendrochronology to investigate subtle structures of the calibration curve corresponding to the beginning and the end of the Yayoi period in Japan. These two results followed IntCal20, which included the 14 C ages of two Japan-sourced trees. The findings suggest that dating of specimens obta…

  • C Dating of an Old Wooden Building

Open Access•Nanae Nakao, Minoru Sakamoto et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Hikobe House is an important cultural property located in Gunma prefecture. It is one of the oldest manor houses in the Kanto region of Japan. The age of the Hikobe House has up to now been uncertain. There are no architectural records or memorandum tags that indicate when the Hikobe House was built. The living room of the Hikobe House has a style of the latter half of the 17th century, while the guest rooms exhibit a style more typical of the 16…

  • Carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis and radiocarbon dating on the Initial Jomon human skeletons from Iwashita Cave, Sasebo City, Nagasaki, Japan

    Open Access•Minoru Yoneda, Takayuki Omori et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2017•References: 16

Bone collagen was extracted from a series of Jomon skeletons from Iwashita Cave in Sasebo City, Nagasaki, Japan, which were excavated in 1964-1966 seasons. The radiocarbon dates on 5 skeletons from Layer V showed calibrated dates between 9000 and 10000 cal B.P. corresponding to the Initial (Earliest) Jomon period

  • Analyzing the Final Jomon human remains from the Nonomae shellmound, Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture

    Open Access•Fumiko Saeki, Noboru Adachi et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 32

  • Radiocarbon in 9th to 5th Century BC Tree-Ring Samples from the Ouban 1 Archaeological Site, Hiroshima, Japan

Open Access•Hiromasa Ozaki, Mineo Imamura et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Cited by: 9•References: 12

In order to investigate the regional atmospheric radiocarbon offset, accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14 C measurements were made on 5-yr increments of a Japanese wood sample dendrochronologically dated to 820–436 BC. The 14 C data from the Japanese tree-ring samples were compared with the IntCal04 calibration curve (Reimer et al. 2004). In most parts, the differences between IntCal04 and 14 C dates in the Japanese tree-ring samples were withi…

  • Radiocarbon Wiggle-Matching of Japanese Historical Materials with a Possible Systematic Age Offset

Open Access•Mineo Imamura, Hiromasa Ozaki et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Cited by: 8•References: 7

Progress in radiocarbon accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) techniques enables much more access to wiggle-matching techniques for high-precision 14 C dating with relatively low costs than before. Recently, we have applied wiggle-matching for a number of wood samples where dendrochronology is difficult because of various limitations imposed for dendro-dating. In most cases, wiggle-matching gave rather unambiguous calendar ages, but we found that i…
