  • The Forces of Homology-Hirohito, Emperor of Japan and the 1928 Rites of Succession

    Einat Bar‐on Cohen, Einat Bar-On Cohen•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 25

In November 1928, Hirohito became the emperor of Japan through a series of rituals, beginning with the emperor's presentation to the world. Afterwards the emperor soul, transmitted from the sun goddess through the preceding generations of emperors to the current one, is rejuvenated and pacified by attaching different gods (kami) to it. Then, in his full presence as a living-kami, the new emperor enters a finely balanced structure to partake of sa…

  • Events of organicity

    Open Access•Einat Bar‐on Cohen, Einat Bar-On Cohen•ARTICLE•Anthropological Theory•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 33

A brief and schematic presentation of two ethnographic events illustrates the dynamic engendered by the clash between the state as striated and organicity. This clash is the Deleuzian war machine. The ethnographic events are part of Israeli nationality: one shows a close combat training session within the Israeli Defense Forces and the other a recording of Holocaust survivors' stories for educational purposes. Both are instances in which somatici…

  • Once We Put Our Helmets On, There are No More Friends

    Open Access•Einat Bar‐on Cohen, Einat Bar-On Cohen•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 11

At their final training session, soldiers at the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) close-combat instructors' course are faced with an extreme situation. Clad in full protection gear, they must face consecutive opponent and fight until they can fight no more. The training setting presents to the soldiers a dilemma epitomized in the instructor's question ''Do you want to quit?'' The author argues that the question, as well as, the situation as a whole p…

  • Globalisation of the war on violence

    Open Access•Einat Bar‐on Cohen, Einat Bar-On Cohen•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2010

Participants from all around the world come to train in Israeli (close combat) with the ‘Tour and Train’ programme. They perform exercises that aim to control close‐range violence and are devised within a certain logic, and this logic is subsequently disseminated to become part of the globalised view of the war on terror. Whereas the understanding of globalised terror and its counteraction is often drawn from political statements and their interp…

  • Survival, an Israeli Ju Jutsu school of martial arts

    Open Access•Einat Bar‐on Cohen, Einat Bar-On Cohen•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2009•Cited by: 12•References: 36

    ■ Nationalism is the untenable union of the impersonal, mechanistic, bureaucratic logic of the state and the intimate, emotional, organic logic of the nation. While practicing martial arts, the participants at the Israeli Survival School of Ju Jutsu create a utopian Israeliness, using bits of state-national understandings to form a family-like organicity. At the North Indian school of wrestling described by Joseph Alter, too, an organic utopian n…

  • Timing in Karate and the Body in Its Own Right

    Open Access•Einat Bar‐on Cohen, Einat Bar-On Cohen•ARTICLE•Social Analysis•2007

Training toward 'perfect timing' in karate entails deciphering small movements and interpreting them as signs of an opponent's decision to launch an attack. It includes the aptitude to perceive those signs and react to them before the attacker is aware of her own decision. It also depends on the ability of the body to perceive and move without recourse to cognition. This article considers the body in its own right as well as how it is involved in…

  • Kimeand the Moving Body

    Open Access•Einat Bar‐on Cohen, Einat Bar-On Cohen•ARTICLE•Body & Society•2006•Cited by: 14•References: 21

This article concerns kime, a somatic code used in the 'empty hand' Japanese martial art of karate. Kime is a tactile-kinesthetic entity born out of practice, coming into being in a social setting through the specific organization of the body-self, fusing body and self into one stance and movement. Kime is entirely embodied, yet can only be operated and recognized inter-subjectively. It plays a crucial role in combat and at the same time also ind…
