  • Waiting for accelerations. Speculating on guar seeds in the Indian desert

    Stine Simonsen Puri•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2021

This article unfolds how an extreme acceleration in the price of a seed in 2012 changed farming in a rural area of India by reorienting the imagined sources of wealth in farming. The seed in question is guar which have been grown for centuries for cow fodder, but which is also used in fracking, and because of a growing international demand combined with a limited supply and wild speculation, the prices in 2012 grew exponentially with 1500% in a p…

  • Gambling on the Monsoon in the Indian Desert

    Stine Simonsen Puri•ARTICLE•GeoHumanities•2021•References: 15

In the desert area of Rajasthan, people have been betting money on when and how much it will rain during the monsoon for centuries. Despite state investment in forecasting technologies in India, rain bettors do not believe official weather data can predict the precise timing, volume, or location of rain. They instead observe the sky and share real-time information via social networks. Ethnographic research on weather prediction has focused on far…

  • Speculation on racing odds in India

    Stine Simonsen Puri•ARTICLE•Economy and Society•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 20

Horse racing has existed in India since the British established race clubs across the continent as places for socializing and legal gambling. Today, betting on horses in Delhi is a form of speculation, where bettors not only calculate probabilities of horses, but try to figure out insider knowledge of rigged races by observing the odds. This becomes particularly evident when betting odds on a particular horse suddenly change with an accelerating …

  • Escalations

    Open Access•Lars Højer, A Kublitz et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Theory•2018•Cited by: 16•References: 57

In this article, we explore what happens in qualitative terms when a social phenomenon accelerates in quantitative terms. We do so by introducing escalation as an analytical concept through which to understand sudden processes of accelerating change. Using the Danish cartoon controversy as the ethnographic prism, we show that accelerating dynamics may not only imply the quantitative growth of "things" but also that the qualitative scales underpin…

  • Relationships of Chance

Stine Simonsen Puri•ARTICLE•South Asia Journal of South Asian…•2016•Cited by: 1

This paper examines male friendship at the Delhi racecourse as an example of a sociality amidst an urban South Asian setting defined by uncertainty and the absence of fixed identities. It argues that such friendships are ‘relationships of chance’, embodying and reflecting the contingency of the gambling arena, rather than sociological or ritual notions which may condition friendship in other settings. This hyper-competitive and hyper-social space…

  • Betting on Performed Futures

Stine Simonsen Puri•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies of South Asia…•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 18

In this article I focus on prediction in an Indian gambling market. The article is based on my long-term fieldwork at Delhi Racecourse, which offered a microcosm in which to examine speculations on future uncertainty. I argue that these speculations are oriented toward predicting people rather than horses. This is because the future is not considered an open-ended event subject to laws of chance, but rather an event that is fixed. The races are p…

  • Speculation

L Bear, Ritu Birla et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies of South Asia…•2015•Cited by: 44•References: 12

Speculation structures the unprecedented breadth and depth of contemporary global capitalism. We define it as an engagement with uncertainty that aims to materialize potential futures. Studies of economization and financialization have highlighted the production of value through transparent practices of calculation and have focused on the Global North. As an alternative, we use ethnographic and historical genealogical methods to explore predictiv…
