Vowel-consonant metathesis in Nivaĉle
Vowel-consonant metathesis is observed in a variety of contexts throughout the Nivaĉle (Mataguayan) grammar. It occurs in both verbal and nominal domains, characteristically resulting from the affixation of a consonant-initial suffix to a consonant-final stem. This paper provides an optimality theoretic account for vowel-consonant metathesis and vowel epenthesis in Nivaĉle. It is demonstrated that metathesis responds to phonological requirements;…
A Reanalysis of Nivaĉle k͡l and ɬ
This paper describes and analyzes the typologically unique lateral system of Nivaĉle (Mataguayan). There is no lateral approximant in this language, but rather two lateral obstruents: the lateral fricative /ɬ/ and the complex segment /k͡l/. These two sounds behave differently in terms of both their phonotactic patterning and their morphophonemic alternations; they do not participate in any phonological processes that invoke their lateral articula…
Nivaĉle (shichaam lhavos variety)
Nivaĉle [niβaˈe] (ISO 639-3: cag) is a Mataguayan language spoken in the Argentinean and Paraguayan Chaco by approximately 16,350 speakers in Paraguay (DGEEC 2012) and 553 in Argentina (INDEC 2004-2005
The variable prosodic parsings of Nivaĉle glottal stop
This paper establishes the featural and prosodic representations of the Nivaĉle (Mataguayan) glottal stop. On the one hand, it is proposed that the Nivaĉle glottal stop is unspecified for place features, but specified for constricted glottis ([c.g]). On the other hand, it is advanced that /ʔ/ is an independent consonantal phoneme in the language that has multiple prosodic parsings. First, a glottal stop can occur (contrastively) in syllable onset…
Evidential Determiners in Nivaĉle
Earlier work on Nivaĉle (Mataguayan, Argentina and Paraguay) claims that the determiners na, ja, and ca introduce entities that are known by the speaker, while pa is used for entities that are unknown or are known by report. On the basis of fieldwork, I argue that the primary distinction is instead one of evidentiality, defined as the encoding of source of information. The determiners na, ja, and ca indicate the speaker has or had firsthand senso…
