  • Symbiosis or Precarity? Digital Platforms’ Role on Australian Digital-Native Journalism and Their Funding Models

    Open Access•Andrea Carson, Denis Müller•ARTICLE•Media and Communication•2024

Legacy media outlets, especially newspapers, have confronted significant challenges this century due to the shift of advertising revenues to digital platforms like Facebook and Google. Major events like the Global Financial Crisis (2007–2009) and Covid-19 pandemic intensified the financial strain, resulting in further downsizing and newsroom closures. Despite these difficulties, digital-native journalism has experienced widespread growth globally…

  • Freedom of speech is not freedom from ethics

    Open Access•J D Thompson, Denis Müller•ARTICLE•Media International Australia•2021•References: 18

This article examines how freedom of speech is framed in the media controversy surrounding the Australian rugby player Israel Folau's April 2019 Instagram post. A content analysis and framing analysis of newspaper reportage reveals that the controversy has been largely discussed in terms of whether or not Folau's speech was being curtailed and whether this curtailing indicates a broader, ideologically motivated censoriousness. This discussion is …

  • The Emerging Deficit

Margaret Simons, Andrea Carson et al.•CHAPTER•Routledge Companion to Local…•2020

Australians cluster in the country’s five largest coastal cities, which together account for more than 16 million of the nation’s 25 million people. This concentration of population in a vast continent presents abiding challenges for national politics and society. News media is no exception. Australian local and regional communities therefore offer a potent case study of the effects of changes in how news is produced and distributed, and the impa…

New Zealand media were focused largely on empathetic coverage of victims and resisted the alleged gunman's attempts to publici…

  • Understanding the civic impact of journalism

Margaret Simons, Rodney Tiffen et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism Studies•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 11

The importance of journalism to civil society is constantly proclaimed, but empirical evidence on journalism's impact, and how this operates, is surprisingly thin. Indeed, there is confusion even about what is meant by the term “impact”. Meanwhile, the issue of the role of journalism is becoming increasingly urgent as a consequence of the rapid changes engulfing the news media, brought about by technological change and the flow-on effect to the t…

  • A new symbiosis? Opportunities and challenges to hyperlocal journalism in the digital age

    Open Access•Anne Carson, Andrea Carson et al.•ARTICLE•Media International Australia•2016•Cited by: 11•References: 19

This article draws on 'hyperlocal' journalism scholarship to explore the civic functions of Australian local reporting in the digital age. Through place-based case studies based on interviews with media and civic leaders from three disparate communities, we find community groups are engaging with social media, particularly Facebook, to connect locals to services and community news. Community service providers are increasingly adept at using socia…

    Open Access•Denis Müller, Michael Gawenda•ARTICLE•Media International Australia•2010•References: 1

A major issue to arise in the aftermath of the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria in February 2009 concerned access by the media to the places destroyed. This issue arose in five main forms: media efforts to circumvent roadblocks; use of deception by media to get into areas that were open only to residents; use of private property by media, with and without the connivance of the authorities, as venues for gathering material; balancing residents…

    Open Access•Denis Müller•ARTICLE•Studies in Religion/Sciences…•2001

Three hundred and fifty-six interviews were conducted with 214 influentials over the three-year period. This paper proposes an a fortiori case study method of testing Bachrach and Baratz's 1962, 1963, 1970 well-known hypotheses about the second face of power. This face of power is allegedly characterised by exclusionary agendasetting; elites exclude the interests and demands of the poor from the policy agenda. A working assumption of the paper is that exclusionary agenda-setting may be quite infrequent. If we can specify the conditions under which …
