  • Butchering Site Evolution Induced by Past and Recent Snowmelt Runoff

    Open Access•Jean-François Bernier, Jean‐François Bernier et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2016•References: 10

A geoarchaeological study of a unique Inuit site in Nunavik was undertaken in order to document the impact of humans on the Arctic environment. The Saunitarlik archaeological site is located on the Aivirtuuq peninsula near Kangiqsujuaq (Nunavik), and it was used as a butchering site by Inuit in the 19th century. It consists of an open‐air midden containing thousands of bones lying in the bed of an intermittent stream. This study documents the tra…

  • La présence « viking » au Nunavik

    Open Access•Daniel Gendron•ARTICLE•Études/Inuit/Studies•2016

  • On the "Viking" presence in Nunavik

    Open Access•Daniel Gendron•ARTICLE•Études/Inuit/Studies•2016

Back in the 1950s, Dorset longhouses were unknown to archaeologists working in the Arctic. The discovery of one near Kangirsuk (Nunavik) in the early 1960s was an important addition to the corpus of data on the Dorset culture, but it was never presented as such by Thomas Lee. Somehow, this discovery was twisted into something else, and although Dorset longhouses are today being recognized in different parts of the Arctic world, the Imaha site at …
