Arts-based creative interventions have demonstrated positive psychological effects, including creativity, self-efficacy, and social connectivity, an approach deeply rooted in a humanistic framework that emphasizes the intrinsic value of every individual and the transformative power of creative expression. This study explored the feasibility and acceptability of a web-based music composition intervention to support survivors of serious illness hos…

A Qualitative Inquiry About Pruno, an Illicit Alcoholic Beverage Linked to Botulism Outbreaks in United States Prisons
Objectives. Since 2011, 3 outbreaks of botulism in US prisons have been attributed to pruno, which is an alcoholic beverage made by inmates. Following 1 outbreak, we conducted a qualitative inquiry to understand pruno brewing and its social context to inform outbreak prevention measures. Methods. We interviewed staff, inmates, and parolees from 1 prison about pruno production methods, the social aspects of pruno, and strategies for communicating …
Underprivileged School Children and the Assault on Dignity
The control of food among schoolchildren who have been racially and economically marginalized across the cityscape
This analysis involves an investigation of the corporate control of food in relation to low income and culturally dominated schoolchildren in cities. This includes an exploration of the problem as expressed globally and historically in relation to transnational policy networks. Since corporate growth always necessitates controlling the direction of what people talk about on the ground, I additionally critique the emerging popularity of the policy…
Children’s Human Rights and Public Schooling in the United States
Promotion Text for Childrenâ s Human Rights and Public Schooling in the United States Julia Hall The United States tends to portray itself as a human rights leader. However, human rights concerns are confronted everyday by people in this democracy, including children. The purpose of this volume is to bring attention to the fact that against the backdrop of neoliberal expansion, serious human rights violations are taking place among children every…
Extended Field Efforts to Reduce the Risk of Non-response Bias
We examine the effects on survey estimates of extended interviewer efforts to gain survey response, including refusal conversion attempts and attempts to make contact with difficult-to-contact sample members. Previous research on this topic has identified that extended efforts do appear to affect estimates, and in ways that seem consistent with bias reduction. We extend the previous research in three ways. First, we provide the first study of cha…
Understanding flood regime changes in Europe
There is growing concern that flooding is becoming more frequent and severe in Europe. A better understanding of flood regime changes and their drivers is therefore needed. The paper reviews the current knowledge on flood regime changes in European rivers that has been obtained through two approaches. The first approach is the detection of change based on observed flood events. Current methods are reviewed together with their challenges and oppor…

I Had a Lot of Black Friends Growing up that my Father didn't Know About
Here we pull together data drawn from three studies to probe the issue of white poor and working class female racism further than previous research has done. All three investigations are deep ethnographic portraits of men and women, boys and girls, in the urban north-east, spanning middle school through young adulthood. In the first two studies, we present data gathered from men and boys and then suggest the relative absence of racialised discour…
Where the Girls (and Women) Are
This paper takes up a theoretical and empirical investigation of how two community‐based projects for young women both create safety from community and domestic violence but how, in the process, discourses of multicultural inclusion define one site, and racist discourses of exclusion float through the other site. By relying on two intensive qualitative case studies of community‐based organizations for girls, one exclusively White and working clas…
Singing off Key
Not only in the culture and organization of Western schools is European hegemony emphasized, classroom materials provide a substantial place for the creation and perpetuation of racist ideology. Often overlooked in critiques of classroom materials are texts that pertain to what are sometimes called enrichment subject materials, such as art and music. Examined in this review is the representation of those of African ancestry in grade school music …
Canal Town Boys
In this research, I contend that domestic violence is thoroughly embedded in the lives of a group of poor, white, middle school males living in an urban section of the postindustrial Northeast. The scope of the investigation spans one year of observation and interviews with 18 poor youth as they went about their days-at their bilingual school, on neighborhood streets, and in the local community center. By not disrupting the violent attitudes and …
It Hurts to Be a Girl
In this article, the author asserts that a group of poor white middle school young women in the postindustrial urban Northeast are living among high concentrations of domestic violence. Many of these females are constructing futures characterized by jobs and self-sufficiency. As their narrations indicate, such plans are fueled by the hope that by living independent lives as single career women, they will bypass the domestic violence that currentl…
