  • Saviors, nurturers, or magically insane

    E M Mcmain, Jt Torres•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Media can both perpetuate and disrupt the patriarchal, anthropocentric discourses that shape social understandings of “woman” and “nature.” Using a braided feminist lens, we investigated media discourses about white women’s relationships with the human and more-than-human world. We present our analysis in three cases: Olivia from the novel, The Overstory; mother from the film, mother!; and Eleven from the Netflix series, Stranger Things. These ch…

  • Situated Narratives and Sacred Dance

J T Torres, Jill Flanders Crosby et al.•BOOK•Situated Narratives and Sacred…•2021

"Through a revolutionary ethnographic approach that foregrounds storytelling and performance, this book explores shared ritual traditions between the Anlo-Ewe people of West Africa and their descendants, the Arara of Cuba, who were brought to the island in the Atlantic slave trade"

Despite the gradual acceptance of arts-based methods in ethnography, there still remains a false dichotomy of art and scientific research. This essay contributes to the discussion by arguing that fiction also plays a…

  • Dreaming in Arará

    Jt Torres•ARTICLE•InTensions•2016

The following essay employs creative nonfiction to explore the space of dreams as an opportunity to flesh out cross-cultural understandings of art’s capacity or limits to materialize new ways of relating in the world. Treating dreams as data disrupts the normative notion of what counts as experience. By drawing on Joan Scott and Elizabeth Adams St. Pierre, I argue for more transgressive approaches to relating in the world, made possible through a…

  • The Spirit of the Symbol

    Open Access•Jt Torres•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Humanism•2016•Cited by: 1

In December 2014, I traveled to Cuba as part of an ethnographic research team to explore the hybrid identities of those in Perico and Agramonte, Cuba who descend from the Arará. Despite the fact that my family's history is tied to Cuba, this was my first trip to the island. The research project became a personal journey into the ways faith, science, and performance are all intertwined but also unravel one another
