  • Press Photography and Visual Rhetoric1

Terence Wright•CHAPTER•The SAGE Handbook of Visual…•2011

Visual rhetoric is concerned with understanding how images communicate, how they function in a social and cultural environment, and how they embody meaning. In the press context, photographs might be seen primarily as conveyors of information about important events in the world, but the structure of the news media and the expectations of readers somewhat complicate the matter. We have to regard press photographs as part of a complex network of cu…

  • Moving images

    Terence Wright•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2002

The paper takes the form of a broad-based exploration of the visual representations of refugees across a range of media forms. Firstly it suggests that these media images have origins in Christian iconography. Then the discussion considers the treatment of forced migration in the fiction film, proposing that cinema representations often conform to the "road movie" genre. A discussion of contemporary issues in the media representation of refugees …

This paper aims to set the foundations for an integration of digital photography into the broader framework of visual representation. The current climate seems to be marked by a preoccupation with contrasting the digital with the analog image. To read the gospels as fiction, as Frank Kermode does in The Genesis of Secrecy , the Charles Eliot Norton lectures delivered at Harvard in 1977–8, does not require the abandonment of all concern for ‘history’ or for ‘truth’, two other fictions which are essential for faith. Nor, In Defence of the Imagination , the title Dame Helen Gardner gave to her Charles Eliot Norton lectures of 1979–80, need apologists for Christianity commit themselves to …
