Convergence and divergence
The international system is in a transitional period with competing strategic narratives attempting to influence the trajectory of this change. The European Union (EU) has emerged as a significant voice in this transition and is positioning itself as a more global actor particularly in its relationship with the African Union (AU). Drawing from a wide range of policy documents, this article examines AU strategic narratives on a changing internatio…

The Evolution and Transformation of Bankside, London, 1947-2019
The redevelopment of the Bankside area in central London was proposed in 1943, yet substantive regeneration was only achieved toward the end of the century. This article analyzes the processes whereby a postwar industrial, then deindustrial, locality evolved into a popular leisure and residential quarter. It argues that strategic plans for the area engendered only incremental and piecemeal redevelopment. Change was principally driven by industria…
The energyscape of the lower Thames and Medway
This article examines the history of the energy landscape — the energyscape — of the lower River Thames and Medway from the 1860s to the present. It explores why, and in what ways, the energy industries have exploited the area and its landscape. Key factors include its accessibility for ocean-going shipping; the proximity to energy consumers in London and south-east England; the availability of large areas of land; and water resources. The energy…
The battle for Bankside
In the mid-1940s a conflict arose – the battle for Bankside – between two plans for a contested space on London's South Bank. The electricity industry planned to rebuild Bankside power station to alleviate a critical shortage of electricity, whereas the County of London Plan envisaged redevelopment of the area as public gardens, flats and offices. This article examines these plans and their entanglement in the planning system as then constituted;…
Landscape, Agriculture and the Rural Economy of Hockley, Essex, 1840–1916
This article examines the local economy of a parish in south-east Essex during a period when economic, social and technological factors were transforming rural Britain. Record linkages are used to construct a microhistory of Hockley to analyse the exploitation of the landscape and rural livelihoods. Agricultural and occupational change reflected many national economic and social influences, but there are also counter examples to regional patterns…
Transatlantic Migration and the Amalgamated Society of Engineers in Fall River, Massachusetts, 1873-79
Between 1820 and 1900 about 48,500 English-born spent at least some of their lives in Fall River, Massachusetts. The big attraction was the cotton mills, which, at their peak (1875-1900) were regarded as the textile production centre of the world. The majority of the English born hailed from Lancashire and Cheshire and accounted for almost every member of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers (ASE) branch at the time. The branch existed for only s…

Looking through Taiwan
Anthropologists have long sought to extricate their work from the policies and agendas of those who dominate—and often oppress—their native subjects. Looking through Taiwan is an uncompromising look at a troubling chapter in American anthropology that reveals what happens when anthropologists fail to make fundamental ethnic and political distinctions in their work. Keelung Hong and Stephen O. Murray examine how Taiwanese realities have been repre…
