  • Examining Mentors’ In-the-Moment Observations of Youth-Related Concerns Within an After School Mentoring Program

Open Access•Lindsey M Weiler, Amy Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Child and Adolescent Social Work…•2026

Mentors serve as critical sources of support for young people and have a unique vantage point for observing the child’s life. Their perspective is also crucial for identifying the challenges mentors may encounter, which helps guide training and supervision. Using archival data, the current study sought to index real-time concerns that mentors were noticing with their youth mentees (ages 11–18) during a site-based mentoring program. This program d…

Dawn Terzulli, Dawn M Terzulli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Nursing Education•2026

BACKGROUND: Medication safety is a core nursing competency, yet up to half of new graduate nurses are involved in errors. • Perioperative Management of Pediatric Epilepsy Neuromodulation Devices

Open Access•Young May Cha, Ashley Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2026

Drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) has a significant burden on children and their families that extends beyond seizure management. Surgery can be a curative treatment but is sometimes not an option for certain generalized epilepsies or epilepsy in an eloquent region. Neuromodulation therapies (vagus nerve stimulation–VNS, deep brain stimulation–DBS, and responsive neurostimulation–RNS) have emerged as effective palliative treatments to mitigate seizur…

  • AI Séance

Open Access•Hope Schroeder, Amy Smith et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2025•References: 1

As AI becomes a prism through which we reflect, see, and make sense of the world, the way we create creative, transcendent experiences around AI can shape our relationship to it. Drawing inspiration from the ritual structures of Spiritualist séances and creative art-making séances of Hilma af Klint, we present reflections from a series of participatory experiments we called AI Séances. These gatherings brought together artists, technologists, and…

  • Does workplace inclusion mitigate emotional exhaustion? Evidence from local government organizations

    Nicole M Humphrey, Nicole Humphrey et al.•ARTICLE•Public Management Review•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 101

Over the past few years, many local government organizations have become more concerned with employee burnout and identifying strategies to support employees. In this paper we examine inclusion as a resource that can shape emotional exhaustion and buffer against two demands, workplace incivility and COVID-19 job-related changes. With survey data collected from three local governments, we find that inclusion is associated with reduced feelings of …

  • How Counselors Can Help Faith Communities Lower Suicide Risk

Karen Mason, Frank Robinson et al.•ARTICLE•Counseling and Values•2022

The proportion of U.S. lives lost to suicide is increasing. It is imperative to study factors that decrease suicide rates, including religion. To collaborate with and train faith communities ( fc ), counselors need to understand the protective factors in fc . A purposive sample of 26 faith leaders and congregants completed interviews. • Memes and Social Messages

Open Access•Becky Beucher, David Low et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•References: 4

This article documents the design and implementation of a culturally responsive critical media literacies curriculum centered around media representations of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). Students (grades 6-8) were invited to discuss media imagery relating to DAPL and to create memes reflecting their understandings. To situate this work, we articulate a framework that blends critical media literacies and culturally responsive and sustaining …

  • Challenging mass incarceration in the City of Care

    Open Access•Elizabeth Brown, Amy Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Theoretical Criminology•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Challenges to mass incarceration often come from places seeking to bolster “community” sanctions and community-based alternatives to punishment. In the City of Care, local community activists challenged growing rates of juvenile incarceration and the overrepresentation of youth of color in juvenile detention by advocating for a community-based “circle of care”. These efforts resulted in the local juvenile court embracing the “least restrictive in…

    Open Access•Amy Smith, Dale R Fuqua et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2011

  • Perceived Gender of a Pastor's Name and Ratings of Vocational Success

Open Access•Douglas Degelman, Amy Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2005

Undergraduate students (16 men and 16 women) from a Christian university read a 1-page description of a pastor named either "Carl Anderson" or "Carol Anderson." Students rated each named pastor on four items summed for a measure of vocational success. We predicted, based on role congruity, that students would rate a female-named pastor lower than a male-named pastor on the measure, but women's ratings of pastoral vocational success were significa…
