Impact of pre-Columbian “geoglyph” builders on Amazonian forests
Significance Amazonian rainforests once thought to be pristine wildernesses are increasingly known to have been inhabited by large populations before European contact. How and to what extent these societies impacted their landscape through deforestation and forest management is still controversial, particularly in the vast interfluvial uplands that have been little studied. In Brazil, the groundbreaking discovery of hundreds of geometric earthwor…
Late-Holocene climate dynamics recorded in the peat bogs of Tierra del Fuego, South America
The ombrotrophic peat bogs of Tierra del Fuego are located within the southern westerly wind belt (SWWB), which dominates climate variability in this region. We have reconstructed late-Holocene water-table depths from three peat bogs and aimed to relate these records to shifts in regional climate. Water-table depths were quantified by the analysis of testate amoeba assemblages, and a regional transfer function was used to infer past water-table d…
Drought and dust deposition in the West African Sahel
A high-resolution, multiproxy palaeolimnological record from the Manga Grasslands, northeastern Nigeria, spanning the last 5500 calendar years, reveals the episodic deterioration in Sahelian climate as significant biogeophysical thresholds were crossed. Desert-dust deposition began to increase 4700 cal. BP. Rainfall during the summer-monsoon season declined permanently after 4100 cal. BP. A further significant change in atmospheric circulation, g…

General circulation (GCM) modelling of palaeoclimates
The best method so far devised for testing the ability of a general circulation model (GCM) to simulate climates very different from today is to conduct 'snapshot' experiments for specific times in the past at which the climatic forcing can be prescribed in detail. This paper focuses on the period from the last glacial maximum through the Holocene. During this interval, changes in atmospheric circulation were driven primarily by variations in the…

Late holocene human impact on lake basins in central mexico
Palaeolimnological investigations in the volcanic highlands of Central Mexico (19°N) have yielded clear evidence of environmental degradation associated with episodes of forest clearance and agricultural expansion during the last 3500 years. Preliminary results are presented from five lake basins situated at altitudes of 1700 to 2575 m a.s.l., along a gradient of decreasing aridity and temperature from north to south: Hoya San Nicolás de Parangue…
Anthropogenic Soil Erosion around Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico, during the Preclassic and Late Postclassic-Hispanic Periods
Lake Pátzcuaro (2,035 m asl), situated in the temperate highland-forest region of central Mexico, was the focus of Postclassic Tarascan civilization. Today, the lake is bordered by wide, swampy flats, which can be interpreted as low-angle fans of colluvial material derived from the deeply eroded, lower-valley side slopes. A gully near the northwest shore exposed two colluvial units: The lower one was dated at 2,300 years B.P. (350 B.C.) at the ba…
