  • Unofficial Sister Cities

    Mark A Grey, Anne C Woodrick•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2002

The meatpacking plant in Marshalltown, Iowa, is heavily dependent on production workers from one Mexican community. Not only has this plant developed a dependence on these immigrants, but the migrants, their families, and their home town have become economically and socially dependent on the plant. • The Industrial Food Stream and its Alternatives in the United States

    Mark Grey, Mark A Grey•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2000

Turnover rates are particularly high in meatpacking. The focus of this article is a large meatpacking plant in Iowa that experienced annual turnover of 80%. Two themes emerged from this study: tension between the plant's predominate ethnic groups, Anglos and Latino immigrants, and working conditions…

  • Low-Cost Voice-Mail for the Homeless in Waterloo, Iowa

    Mark A Grey, Mone Quang•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•1994

Although shelter is the most immediate need of all homeless people, improving their long-term conditions requires employment, health care, and permanent housing. As we discovered through a review of the homeless literature and discussion with community service providers, a primary barrier to securing health care, permanent housing, and particularly employment is the lack of a phone number

This article considers the role of sports in relations among immigrant and established-resident minority and Anglo students in Garden City, Kansas, High School.
