Material flows as Earth politics
Muizenberg East, in Cape Town, South Africa, is a peri-urban landscape that encompasses sewage works, tourist beaches, a nature reserve, a waste dump, a Ramsar site for the protection of migrating birds, shack settlements, and a corporate office park. The complex and contradictory uses of this land demonstrate the limitations of social-ecological analysis and ecosystem service approaches to environmental governance. Mapping contemporary struggles…

Rock | Water | Life
In Rock | Water | Life Lesley Green examines the interwoven realities of inequality, racism, colonialism, and environmental destruction in South Africa, calling for environmental research and governance to transition to an ecopolitical approach that could address South Africa's history of racial oppression and environmental exploitation. Green analyzes conflicting accounts of nature in environmental sciences that claim neutrality amid ongoing str…

Teaching the Environmental Humanities
This article provides the first international overview and detailed discussion of teaching in the environmental humanities (EH). It is divided into three parts. The first offers a series of regional overviews: where, when, and how EH teaching is taking place. This part highlights some key regional variability in the uptake of teaching in this area, emphasizing important differences in cultural and pedagogical contexts. The second part is a critic…

Contested ecologies
"Contests over knowledge are central to contests over environments. Many of those contests are not just about 'good science' or 'bad science', but over the idea of nature itself: the idea that the nature that science makes known to the world is set apart from 'culture' or 'society', or that nature is comprised of objects -- rivers, fish, soil -- the knowledge of which lies outside social life and democratic politics. Contested Ecologies: Dialogue…
The Rain Stars, the World's River, the Horizon and the Sun's Path
This article curates excerpts from astronomical narratives recorded in Palikur between 2000 and 2008 along the Rio Urucauá, in the Área Indígena do Uaçá on the border of Brazil and French Guiana. The material assembles around the seasonal cycle of stars associated with particular rains and seasonal changes in the landscape. Star maps of the major constellations are counterposed with wood carvings of the constellations. The curation of these narra…
Space, Time, and Story Tracks
Using data collected during ethnographic fieldwork in the Palikur lands known as Arukwa along the Rio Urucauá in the Área Indígena do Uaçá, in Amapá, Brazil, we seek to expand current understandings of Arawakan oral forms of mapping that involve the listing of place-names. This article argues that the practice demonstrates a form of cartographic imagination that is based on a different theorization of the relationship between space and time. Cont…

Anthropologies of knowledge and South Africa's Indigenous Knowledge Systems Policy
Following a visit to the South African Medical Research Council's Indigenous Knowledge Systems Laboratory at Delft, Cape Town, this paper explores the possibilities for anthropological responses to South Africa's Indigenous Knowledge Systems Policy of 2004. While the Policy is admirable in that it focuses attention on the integration of science and traditional knowledge in South Africa, its dualisms of indigenous knowledge and science, and its as…
Cultural heritage, archives & citizenship
This article reports on an effort to apply to an oral history archive design the findings of ethnographic research regarding the visualisation of space and the organisation of knowledge among contemporary Palikur speakers in Arukwa, in northern Brazil. Central to the project rationale was the observation that standard devices for organising such an archive – variously, chronologies, alphabets, taxonomies, cartographies, authorship, etc. – are the…
The Indigenous Knowledge Systems Policy of 2004
South Africa's Indigenous Knowledge Systems Policy was approved by Cabinet in 2004, and the National Indigenous Knowledge Systems Office (NIKSO) was opened in the Department of Science and Technology in 2006. Proposing the integration of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) in the arenas of education, commerce, agriculture, the sciences, law, languages, arts, social sciences, and health, the policy document implies several challenges to the idea of…
"Ba pi ai?"-Rethinking the relationship between secularism and professionalism in anthropological fieldwork
Epistemological commitments shape notions of what constitutes an ethical presence in the field. The article examines the assumption of secularism, linked to objectivity, implicit in codes of ethics. It argues that in fieldwork, the secular position neither guarantees ethical behaviour nor improves data collection. Reflecting on research encounters among Palikur-speakers in Brazil, the article examines the ways in which objectivity unexpectedly fo…

From chronological to spatio-temporal histories
Palikur historical knowledge is overwhelmingly recorded spatially in landscape, but given that the map-maker's vision of the world is a product of a discourse about space and time, is a map an appropriate medium on which to base an archive of historical knowledge? This article explores aspects of Palikur speakers' experiences of landscape and historical time in the region known as 'Arukwa' along the Rio Urucauá in the state of Amapá, Brazil, and c…
Indigenous Knowledge and Archaeological Science
The move towards public archaeology counsels archaeologists to work participatively, placing a high priority on educational and developmental activities with local communities in order to share the means of production of historical knowledge and promote the conservation of heritage. Describing key moments in an archaeological project which took these principles as starting points in an indigenous peoples' reserve in northern Brazil, the paper con…
