Social Economy in the Classroom
The London Birkbeck Schools represent a hitherto largely unexplored episode in the history of British education. They embody the contradictory faces of mid-nineteenth-century radical Liberalism and are of interest, first, because they were determinedly secular and pioneered what was for their time a novel and progressive pedagogy. Second, they had an explicit social purpose. ‘Social economy’—the antithesis of the ‘political economy’ of the founde…
Non-pharmaceutical interventions and risk of Covid-19 infection
This large observational study found evidence for strong protective effects for individuals from use of face coverings, social distancing (including avoiding crowded places) and handwashing on arriving home on developing COVID-19 infection. We also found evidence for an increased risk associated with other behaviours, possibly from recall bias

Heritage in trust
Frequently identified with ‘establishment’ values the National Trust has as often been a focus of critique as of celebration. This essay examines the Trust's changing relation to contested values of heritage as manifest in its acquisitions and management policies, in its engagement with environmental and social issues and an emerging politicisation which transcends a narrow, purely property‐based interpretation of its statutory purpose. Recent ac…

The Closeburn Limeworks Scheme
In the late eighteenth century a substantial limeworking system was created at Closeburn, 20 km north of Dumfries. The lime was mined, then hauled up sloping railways by a waterwheel, for which water was brought some 10 km from the hills. In its passage the water drove a sawmill, a smithy, a joiner's shop and finally a woollen cloth factory. The scheme was largely unknown and unrecorded. Members of Mid-Nithsdale History Society have researched de…
