Introduction. Freaktions
This introduction proposes the concepts of freaktions and monsterization as a framework for understanding the dynamic relationship between official norms and the bodies rendered marginal, deviant, or illegible within contemporary social and political orders. Building on Michael Herzfeld’s notion of the body impolitic, we examine some processes through which normative institutions produce and sustain forms of exclusion. We argue that marginalized …
Preventing Plague in the Italian Renaissance
During the fifteenth century, measures to prevent the plague were implemented almost everywhere in Italy. One essential tool for controlling urban epidemics situation was the use of Registers of the Dead. Francesco Sforza made Milan a pioneer city, establishing one of Europe’s first daily recording systems. These Registers (1450–1801) not only tracked deaths but also provided socio-demographic and clinical information on the population. Through a…
The invisible lives of cobalt miners and green traceability discourses
The mobilization for greenhouse gas reduction has significantly boosted our interest in electric cars and green mobility. E-powered technology and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are now cornerstones of our green tech discourse. These technologies rest on the fast-growing demand for rare metals such as cobalt, an essential component in Li-ion batteries. This article focuses on the invisible lives of the artisanal diggers who mine much of the world…

Material Culture and Authenticity. Fake Branded Fashion in Europe by Craciun, Magdalena
Lost in translation
Starting from the case of ancient Malian terracotta in this article I propose an epistemological reflection on the relationship between hidden practices of circulation of unprovenanced objects and official discourses and policies driven by museums. In particular I develop a critique of the Kantian association of Truth, Beauty and Goodness involved in cultural heritage policies and art circulation. Through this perspective I refer to Luhmann's the…
Ethics, evaluation, and economies of value amidst illegal practices
This special issue focuses on illegal practices and the forms of value produced as people engage in them. Embracing a methodological orientation that attends to criminalized networks and the values they structure from the inside, the contributions included here highlight micro processes of exchange and evaluation. By linking the study of local worlds to the apprehension of wider structural and cultural dynamics and processes, the collection devel…
The Mise en Valeur of the Gold Mines in the Haut-Niger, 1918–1939

Patrons and petits patrons
This article focuses on the hierarchical relationships governing the local illicit trading networks in terracotta antiquities in the region of Baniko, in Mali. The level of authority and social control at the heart of the network lessens with each link in the chain, as a result of the monopoly and the fragmentation of knowledge. The article demonstrates that the social organisation of the network corresponds to a hierarchical habitus that ensures…
